My little old man Black-Chinned Hummingbird is back laughing at your 21 degrees F "extreme cold warning"

dunno if i'm as brave as he is but i should probably make time today to go outside and grab a decent picture, my shots through window glass are terrible...

GUYS hummingbirds are not iguanas, they do not "freeze," they go into torpor & will wake up good as new so PLEASE if you can monitor your feeders keep them up so they will have food available

some of my neighbors make this mistake every year, not bad for me, their winter hummingbirds then end up in my yard & in the yards of other hummingbird fans in the know but...

you could be enjoying them too...

Buff-tailed coronet for #BirdOfTheDay #Poise (All Bird Are Poised). 📷🌿🪶

A photo of a buff-tailed coronet (Boissonneaua flavescens) perched on the end of a dead, moss-covered branch. It is an iridescent deep green colored hummingbird with a relatively short, thin black beak, a small white spot behind its dark eye, and reddish-brown wings and tail. It is facing toward the left of frame with a pale blurred green background.

perhaps because they are so maneuverable, hummingbirds fear nothing & can be one of the easiest subjects for a beginner to practice with

garden hummingbirds used to coming to feeders don't seem bothered at all by flash setups...

A pink and purple tropical flower at the end of a leafy branch is being approached from the left by a green hummingbird with a long black vertical stripe down her white undersides. On the right, the incoming bird is green with a blue head, white nape, shiny green back and white tail. The left bird is a Black-throated Mango adult female. The right hand bird is the White-necked Jacobin adult, 90% chance he's a male, 10% chance she's a female. (The other 90% of females have a different plumage.) Aracauna Lodge, CO. Nov 2025. How Hummingbirds Chill Out To Survive Cold Nights

that last moment of innocence
all your dreams in reach
before you hear the hovering wings
of rufous-tailed hummingbird
here to shove you aside!!!

A truly tiny hummingbird approaches a (by comparison) enormous hummingbird feeder shiny with fresh nectar. The hummingbird is hovering just above the flower shaped feeder spout. Behind is the blurred shape of a larger aggressive hummingbird already flaring their tail. The little guy is an immature male Purple-throated Woodstar, the big bully is the highly successful & widespread species, Rufous-tailed Hummingbird. La FInca Aracauna, CO. Nov 2025. Photo by Peachfront. (For those who have questions--I know the little guy is a male because in some of my images I can see the beginnings of the purple throat starting to grow in as a dark smudge in the center, you probably can't see it in this photo, I only see it cuz I know it's there.)

The backyard was crowded with hummingbirds enjoying our planted native shrubs, so what the heck. Here’s some photos taken in very poor lighting conditions (cloudy, mid-morning, and winter) #Hummingbirds #BirdPhotography #Birds #Fujifilm #SOoC

A hummingbird is perched in a California rose, showing a red stripe on its throat. It's otherwise gray and brown. There's a blurry branch obscuring the lower part of the bird.A hummingbird is perched on an elderberry branch that has fresh grown leaves. The little bird has an olive head and a dirty-yellow to gray chest and belly. It is looking to the right and the background is blurred out.A profile view of a hummingbird looking to the left, with one eye towards the photographer. It is in a ceanothus bush so there are lots of leaves in the way, but the hummingbird can be seen through a hole in the foliage. It has clear plummage, with a bit of red on its head and greens on its tucked-in wings. Its chest is a light gray.A profile view of a hummingbird looking to the right. It might have a membrane covering its eye? It is another bird with clear sharp individual feathers that are olive green in the back to medium gray to the front. Its long thin beak is pointing straight to the right. The background has blurred ceanothus leaves and branches along with gray skies.

not sure about this edit of the Long-tailed Sylph female being heckled by the Bronzy Inca

they were fighting over a feeder but i tried to swap out the feeder for a nearby flower... may work on it again later since it's the only really good photo of the female LT Sylph that i've got

"get off my feeder, u big galoot!" -- angry attack rackettail

seriously, despite their long tails, rackettails are really tiny hummingbirds, the bird on the feeder is a more mid-sized hummingbird called a Fawn-breasted Brilliant

#Birds #Hummingbirds #Feeders #BirdsOfMastodon #Nature #Gardens

A hummingbird feeder hangs in a green garden planted with yellow flowers that are nicely blurred to provide the background. On the feeder, a big eyed hummingbird is perched to drink but still lifting his wings a little to fend off the much smaller if also much longer tailed hummingbird with huge white leg puffs coming at him from behind. The aggressor is the White-booted Rackettail male, the aggressed-upon is the Fawn-breasted Brilliant. Reserva La Rivera, Colombia. Nov 2025. Photo by Peachfront.
