#HuniKuin

The Huni Kuin community I stayed with was located on the banks of the Jordao river. This photo is from a community centre nearby. It hosts local events, especially those of political significance for the Huni Kuin people. In such case, hundreds of people gather here and stay for a few days in the houses that are scattered around.

Have you heard of Kambo 🐸?
Here's a thread about my experience with it in the jungle of with the Huni Kuin people.

Before going there, I had heard of kambo but never had the opportunity to try this . It consists of applying secretions on burnt skin.

I'll post the different steps in the next few days šŸ‘‡šŸ§µ

This is huge! The Huni Kuin people patterns (called Kene Kuin) have just received recognition as a cultural heritage of Brazil. This happens just one month after a similar recognition from the Peruvian Ministry of Culture (Feb 23).

These patterns are found everywhere - in their face and body paints, traditional clothes, ceramics...

Here' a short and interesting documentary on the topic:

Preparing for a sacred ritual: hours before an ayahuasca ceremony with the Huni Kuin (Kashinawa), I received traditional protective tattoos. The dark lines are made from Genipa fruit ink, a natural pigment from a tree indigenous to the Americas. The red markings, known as urucu in Portuguese, come from the achiote shrub. Each pattern holds a particular meaning.

I've got the habit of reading multiple books in parallel. I love to vary the pleasures and choose depending on my mood.

What I'm reading at the moment:

Braiding Sweetgrass

The Art of Holding Space

Tristes Tropiques - I read it in , but here's an English translation:

A moment of connection where Huni Kuin women, gathered inside the ceremonial maloca, share stories and prepare for an ayahuasca ceremony. Some journeyed days by river to be here. There is no shaman and no healing without a community to support.

In these beautiful malocas, traditional dwellings, of the Huni Kuin indigenous people, one family makes their life within these wooden walls. Typically, their blood relatives occupy nearby dwellings. The community is thus bound by both kinship and tradition.

Throwback to when we were helping our Huni Kuin hosts in the preparation of ayahuasca. The scraping of the vine bark is a communal activity in which everyone participates regardless of background. What many outsiders don't realise is that while the medicine work is profound, the ceremony itself resembles a vibrant party by nightfall, full of songs, stories, and a collective journey.

A stunning Huni Kuin bracelet that I brought from my travel to a community in Brazil. Look at the beauty of this handmade treasure, it reminds me of what one can achieve with patience. I put it flat for the photo, but I'll take another one later wearing it so you can properly see it.

The ceremony is now underway. While the ayahuasca is working, everybody is playing music, singing, and dancing.

It's a real celebration of life. The music, the fire, the dance... everything takes on a surreal aspect. I ask myself if I am dreaming or if it is reality!

The ayahuasca has cooled down and is ready. It's around 8pm, the ceremony will start soon, the medicine man has already set up the altar in the maloca. Sacred and meaningful objects are placed in its centre (tobacco, feather fans, containers, icons...).

I can feel nervousness and excitement in my belly.

It finally starts to look like ayahuasca! The brew is left to simmer and reduce. It gradually takes on its characteristic dark brown colour.

When all the liquid has been drained out, what's left is the fibres of the ayahuasca vines and chacruna leaves.
There's no use for it, and it is discarded.

Once it has boiled for a little while, the brew is left to cool down briefly. The ayahuasca vines and chacruna leaves are separated, filtered out, from the liquid.

The next step consists of adding water to the ayahuasca vines and chacruna leaves and bring it to a boil. Typically, a couple of hours are needed to extract the compounds from the plants.

This is done in the ceremonial maloca where the sacred events and community rituals take place.

When the vines are clean, they are beaten in order to separate the fibres. This will allow the active principles of ayahuasca to infuse the brew.

Generations of wisdom woven into every thread. From ceremonial headbands to traditional garments, every Huni Kuin piece is a masterclass in patience and precision. No machines, just skilled hands and ancestral knowledge passed down through time.

Next, the bark of the vine is rasped with a knife. This is a tedious step, but a very important one. You want to keep the vine intact while removing anything on the outside that may pollute the brew (lichen, moss...).
