You can't beat Wellington on a good day, but this not-so-good day will also take some beating, it looks like.

The Metservice has put out a "Strong Wind Warning - Red" (with gusts up to 140km/h), and a "Heavy Rain Warning - Orange".

Time to brace ourselves for "Threat to life from flying items and falling trees. Destructive winds will cause widespread damage including powerlines and roofs, with dangerous driving conditions and significant disruption to transport and power supply" plus "Streams and rivers may rise rapidly. Surface flooding, slips, and difficult driving conditions possible."

Official meteorological advice is to "Stay indoors or seek sturdy shelter away from trees. Avoid travel. Be ready for power and communication outages."
