Running for Ostomy Awareness Day gave me an opportunity to reflect on running a marathon after having an ileostomy placed, and how I got into all this endurance stuff when facing down a permanent colostomy prompted me to search for agency on a bicycle.

Ostomy surgery saved my life from an abscess the size of a softball

2 yrs ago w/Crohn’s in remission, I had a colectomy/ileostomy bc yrs of inflammation made my colon too fragile.

Catch me encouraging my nurses (and other patients!) to run at my infusion today. They have seen me progress from zero to running my first marathon over the last six years (and maybe six surgeries?!)

- It was a wild day, but I managed to keep my Hitchhiker’s Guide handy and used “Don’t Panic!” as a mantra. End result was about 20m off my goal-4:45:40 and in the top 50% of my newly minted age group. Not bad for a guy without a large intestine
