AI models running on the local phone – is (likely) here at scale

Direct access to Apple’s AI models via both APIs and Shortcuts, which is a game-changer for app developers and something that should have been done in the first place (I have been doing almost exactly what they demoed for over a year now with custom Shortcut actions that invoke Azure services, so I am glad they are finally catching up). But having that (and all the privacy-preserving components of their confidential computing platform) available to app developers is a huge win, and I hope they will also make it easier to use custom models in the future.

WWDC 25 Keynote Thoughts – Tao of Mac

I am really excited about this update. I continue to believe that the current LLM coding assistance is a renaissance to personal tools that are best supported by you. I started lifting in December 2023 and have not yet found a great app that fits my needs that also allows me to treat the data base of information with questions to it.

I think this is my calling to create that app for myself (and maybe others who might want something similar).

i have thought recently about how i would design something that's like one of those overpriced calculators such as ti-84, except actually good. i probably will not actually make it in real life. in terms of hardware, it might be made with a raspberry pi zero or something, and i'd like it to have one or two (usb-c?) ports for both charging and i/o, and i'd like it to have a 320x240 color screen. most of the innovation would be on the software side, though.

it would run a specialized os (probably linux-based since linux is well supported with drivers and stuff) that is loosely unix-inspired for familiarity but does not actually try to be a posix os. for example the directory structure would be inspired by the xdg base directories and fhs. basically there would be .config and .local folders in the root, which are structured similarly to what you'd actually find on a linux pc. those and their subdirectories would contain all system and application files.

the main interface would be an actually good programming language. my first thought was python, but while there is lots to love about python for this use-case, there's also some unfortunate things about it too, so it might be better to use a different language instead (maybe even something custom). it would be very preferable if certain expressions were displayed in math notation rather than plain text, to make it better as a calculator.

rather than "programs," there would be "modules," which export things like interfaces, types, and functions. to run an application, you'd explicitly call its main function with whatever arguments it wants. in addition to the main language, it could support webassembly modules for things that need to be super efficient, and maybe also allow for extra programming languages to be installed.

it could possibly also support access control via user groups. user accounts on a calculator make no sense but i think it makes a lot of sense to protect categories of actions behind a password. oh no i'm out of space.

Good morning, friends. 🤔💡☕

11 June 2025

A few days ago, I spent some time trying to figure out how to make a custom emoji—even considered downloading an app for it. But then it occurred to me that a custom emoji wouldn’t be much use if I were the only one who had it, so that escapade ended there. Strange thoughts happen, don’t they?

Once, years ago, during an ice storm, the electricity was out for a week. We had a fireplace but no chainsaw. All the gas-powered ones in stores were sold out, so I came up with what I thought was a clever solution—an electric chainsaw. After all, I had an extension cord. Luckily, my wife put an end to ‘Operation Chainsaw’ before it began. Oh, and in case you're wondering, we didn’t have a generator either.

Trumpet Vine in Bloom

"The image showcases two vibrant pink flowers of a trumpet vine (Campsis radicans), their trumpet-shaped blooms fully open and reaching outward. The petals display a delicate gradient, transitioning from deep pink at the center to lighter shades towards the edges, accentuating their velvety texture. The inner structures, including the stamens, are subtly revealed, adding depth to the composition. Against the lush green foliage, the flowers stand out, their bold hues commanding attention while the leaves provide a natural contrast that enhances their beauty. The close-up perspective highlights the intricate details of these blossoms, capturing the essence of their elegance and vitality." - Copilot

Remember that nuclear reactor honeypot I made? I lost interest in the cloud chamber display pretty quickly but I just had a better idea!

A slowly scrolling cellular automata (like, real slow, one pixel per minute?) When new data comes in it takes each byte, sets the current CA rule as the byte's value, and processes a bunch of cells. Then goes back to 1 cell per minute, except the rule is now whatever the last byte of data was.

Depending on how this looks in practice I might use my XOR method instead of using the bytes directly.

How would it be if we knew we all had our valued place in the world? If we valued all things and all people equally? If education, privilege and basic needs were not dependent on competition but offered freely at every level. If we could see ourselves not at the pinnacle of evolutionary progress but as the supporting roots, with a responsibility to use our skills, intelligence and experience to serve the whole world?
