IEEE Spectrum's Top Programming Languages 2023:

"This year, Python doesn’t just remain No. 1 in our general “Spectrum” ranking—which is weighted to reflect the interests of the typical IEEE member—but it widens its lead."

The top ten #programming languages. Back in 2003 I started messing around in #python , a couple of years later some colleagues told me I should use only #java as Python was of no value... I think they got the wrong langauge, the one I used in school #comal was in the end of less use.

Can AI and fMRI “Hear” Unspoken Thoughts?
Hopes for paralyzed patients counterbalance calls for mental privacy

Utterly fascinating that we don’t know much about the brain, but we seem pretty good at “reading minds”! I got a chance to interview the lead researcher on this study for :

“In AI, bigger is supposed to be better. Neural networks with billions of parameters power everyday AI-based tools, and each new large language model edges out its predecessors in size and complexity. Meanwhile, at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, a researchers have been working on going small.”

I wrote about liquid neural networks for IEEE Spectrum:

A remarkably sober look at the need for regulation, transparency around how models are trained, and costs in the world of AI. It makes a really good point about the UX required for machine learning to be useful at scale.

“I have learned from experience that leaving tools completely open-ended tends to confuse users more than assist,” says Kirk. [

Fantastic #IEEESpectrum article on the Xerox Alto personal computer and the many innovations that came from it to revolutionize personal computing.

Bonus: the article has gorgeous photos of the Alto in use at Xerox in the 1970s.

It’s the 50th anniversary of the ! The has a good article (linked below) and the cover photo is a bit of a flashback. My first computer at Xerox was an Alto (then a and then a ). We all had that same table and chair and some had that same potted plant.

I got lucky and inherited a bean bag chair from someone. They were cool/popular at the time.
