@rschwebel sounds interesting.

How big or small is #barebox?

Cuz I have some issues with #mlb and #isolinux is thoo #thicc for @OS1337 ...

@hyakinthos @HoustonDog the problem is not to boot @OS1337 from #USB. That just works.by chainloading it from #ISOLINUX distros like #Ventoy (abeit, it's cursed)...

@hikari #ISOLINUX?

  • I know, cursed af.

So if anyone wounders how I test @OS1337 without a physical 3,5" FDD ( or a "#FloppyEmulator" hooked up to a system ) I use #Ventoy, which is basically a fancy #ISOLINUX bootloader where one can dump #IMG, #ISO and #VHD onto an #exFAT partition and it'll just boot that!

  • whilst it doesn't emulate a drive on low-level like those fancy #IODD enclosures, it gets the job done...
Ventoy being booted on a EeePC 701 4G with it's boot menu offering floppinux 0.2.1, iPXE, NetBSD 9.3, OS/1337 and the prerelease of OS/1337...

@SweetAIBelle Needless to say I'm convinced I can just boot @OS1337 from either a #USB-#Floppy(-#Emulator via USB Adaptor) or regular #flashdrive using #Ventoy, as #ISOLINUX distro...

I'll test it out today...

Luckily I have some "bare metal" to test against:

  • Sony Vaio P11Z (Atom Z520 / i586 & sse3_atom)
  • hp t530 (AMD GX-212 / i686, amd64 & sse4.1 )
  • Zotac IONITX A-E (Atom 330 / i586, amd64 & sse3_atom)

Sadly I don't have much more "lower end" or "legacy" systems as a significant collection of mine got stolen from storage years ago and I don't have the money flying around to build @rasteri 's #Wee86 / #WeeCee... I was thinking about getting one of those Dell Wyse 3040 which AFAIK come with a #cursed #32bit #UEFI...

Sadly "Potato-level" #Netbooks running #VIA #C7 chips are nowadays rare and absurdly expensive and targeting those would be good as they already get too slow for mainstream 32bit distros like #BunsenLabsLinux so repurposing those as #OS1337 testing machines and target hardware may be a good option...
Tho just clocking down a #ThinClient with VIA Edenwould be sufficient to test out.

One of the machines that stolen from me was a Futro S300 with a #Transmeta CPU that I originally intended to use as #Windows95 box...

  • Like with #Android - #ROMs I've to likely do custom .config files to target such hardware and stay within the 1440kB size Limit for or the "CORE Edition"...

@flexion Because Everest/Challenge is quite a complex architecute as per it's modularity?

I mean if it's supported via #isolinux (#CDROM) or grub (#HDD / #SSD) it should work.

I don't expect to be able to shrink it down to a 1440kB floppy in that case tho I'm not even shure that said machines even have floppy drives...

is it bad if #ISOLINUX has been showing a blinking cursor for the last few minutes? because I'm starting to think it's bad.
