🚨 OPSEC Disaster at the Top: How Michael Waltz Just Compromised U.S. National Security—AGAIN! 🤦🏻‍♂️ 🤬

While the Trump administration lectures about digital security, National Security Adviser Michael Waltz has been using Gmail to coordinate military operations and sharing after-action strike reports in Signal group chats that accidentally included a journalist.

Let’s be clear:
・Personal Gmail was used to discuss weapons systems & troop movements
・Israeli surveillance was exposed—jeopardizing a key intelligence partnership
・Sensitive coordination went through Signal, not JWICS
・Waltz, who attacked Hillary Clinton for email practices, is now guilty of worse

This is not a technical mistake. It’s a policy failure, a hypocritical breach, and a serious threat to U.S. operational integrity.

If you lead in national security, you do not get to bypass your own secure systems. And you certainly don’t blame “legacy contacts” when you get caught.

Accountability isn’t partisan. It’s essential.

@nazokiyoubinbou I mean, I took the 0th Law of Robotics under consideration, but I don’t think any IT policy I could write would save humanity from AI, and by extension, save humanity from itself.

To quote Asimov’s perspective, “Yes, the Three Laws are the only way in which rational human beings can deal with robots—or with anything else. But when I say that, I always remember (sadly) that human beings are not always rational.”

Okay, I went ahead and did it. Asimov’s Laws of Robotics 1, 2, 3, and 4 are all mapped in one form or another into the AI AUP I’m writing.

Law 1: “A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.”

Converted into protecting the data of others.

Law 2: “A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.”

Converted into the guidance for sharing useful prompts to encourage more consistent (and beneficial) results.

Law 3: “A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.”

Converted into guidance about understanding the limitations of any AI tool in use so as not to risk misuse and potentially need to revoke access.

Law 4: “A robot must establish its identity as a robot in all cases.”

Converted into guidance that AI results shall be established as AI in all cases.

I am writing my company’s Artificial Intelligence Acceptable Use Policy, and I am deeply tempted to reference Asimov’s Laws of Robotics.

@Theriac While it's true that user awareness and basic security measures are crucial, it's unfair to solely blame users for security breaches. Not everyone is tech-savvy, just as I can't be expected to flawlessly navigate Swedish ballroom etiquette. I simply do not know ;-)

Interestingly, as I understand it, this malware can only operate if a user manually overrides the Gatekeeper security measure. If someone lacks technical knowledge, should they have this ability? This raises the question: is it the user's fault or a reflection of the company's IT policy?

Join us for our next event tomorrow. We‘ll be talking about the intersection of #federalism and #ITPolicy, two topics that I really like engaging with, but way too seldomly in combination 😎 #ITSecurity twitter.com/snv_berlin/status/

‚This week, #BAKS is organising the Deutsches Forum Sicherheitspolitik, or German forum Security Policy #DFS2023, and we are happy to partake in some events that talk about different dimensions of #CyberSecurity policy.

Tomorrow SNV's Julia Schütze will hold a background talk on 'How to boost cyber resilience of towns, communities, and cities', discussing how we can develop policies on a #federal level that increase the resilience of IT-systems on the local level.

Got @EOPbot up and running!

This is an update of my bot from the birdsite which posts policy updates from OMB, OSTP, OPM, etc.

If you're interested in #uspolicy #itpolicy #govtech give it a follow!

Always begin with the end.

Everyone please welcome #mushroom -aficionado, #library -nerd, #civictech leader, and #ITPolicy person @justgrimes to the chat.

Hi, I'm Bill, a software engineer - turned policy pusher - turned bureaucrat.

Most folks know me for my #civictech #opengovernment #opengov work (OpenGov Fndn & Sunlight Fndn)

or my #USGov #ITPolicy work around #cloud: OMB/White House, USDS@VA, SBA, currently SEC

I consider myself a #Govpunk (though I am *actually* a former-sometimes #goth #industrial person)

I make silly shirts & stickers, like "Move Carefully and Fix Things"

I also have a #Minecraft & #Satisfactory streaming series
