River close to engulfing waste mountain, MP warns

Marcus White and Jamie Morris, November 17, 2025

"A river is rising and threatening to engulf a mountain of fly-tipped waste in a field, an MP has warned.

"After heavy rain over the weekend, the River Cherwell is now lapping against the 'obscene' 150m (490ft) long pile near Kidlington in Oxfordshire, Calum Miller told the House of Commons.

"The Liberal Democrat MP for Bicester and Woodstock said the situation had become 'much more urgent' and asked the government to intervene.

"Environment Minister Emma Hardy said the Environment Agency was investigating and had acted to prevent further access to the site.

"Fly-tippers are thought to have spent weeks building up the mound in a field between the river and the A34.

"The Oxfordshire MP said it had reached a height of up to 12m (39ft).

"Asking a Urgent Question in the House of Commons, he said the river level had risen by about 4ft (1.2m) in recent days and some of the waste was now afloat.

"He said: 'This incident highlights that organised criminal gangs are carefully planning operations to dump #IndustrialWaste in the countryside.'

" 'They earn millions of pounds in illegal earnings without a thought for the health of people or animals, nor the damage to soil, water or air. And I am deeply concerned that the #EnvironmentAgency (#EA) is not equipped to deal with this unfolding #EnvironmentalDisaster.'

"Mr Miller said the government should order a clean-up by issuing a directive to the EA, similar to the one given for #HoadesWood in Kent in 2024.

"He also urged ministers to review the government's response to waste crime and allow the National Crime Agency to investigate the most serious cases."

The effect of #ClimateChange on sources of #radionuclides to the #MarineEnvironment

Published: 16 March 2024
Justin P. Gwynn, Vanessa Hatje, Núria Casacuberta, Manmohan Sarin & Iolanda Osvath

Abstract:
"Climate change interacts with the sources and cycling of contaminants, such as radionuclides, in the environment. In this review, we discuss the implications of climate change impacts on existing and potential future sources of radionuclides associated with human activities to the marine environment. The overall effect on operational releases of radionuclides from the nuclear and non-nuclear sectors will likely be increased interference or prevention of normal operations due to weather-related events. For certain #RadioactiveWaste dumped at sea and sunken #NuclearSubmarines, the impact of climate change and ocean #acidification on the release of radionuclides and their subsequent fate in the marine environment should be considered further. Fluxes from secondary sources of radionuclides in the marine and terrestrial environment and cryosphere will change in response to climate change impacts such as sea level rise, warming and changes in precipitation patterns. In addition, climate change impacts may increase the risk of releases of radionuclides from operational and legacy wastes on land to the marine environment. Overall, our synthesis highlights that there is a need to understand and assess climate change impacts on sources of radionuclides to the marine environment to meet environmental and management challenges under future climate scenarios."

Illegal dumping is a serious offense that can result in criminal prosecution. Every case of illegal dumping is investigated. Illegal dumpers are subject to a minimum $500 civil fine and possible criminal prosecution.

Illegal dumping can be costly, but the costs of legal disposal are minimal (if incurred at all). Montgomery County provides one of the most extensive solid waste disposal and recycling programs in the nation. Take advantage of the many facilities the County offers to properly dispose of, or recycle, your unwanted materials.

Port Talbot men banned from handling waste after repeated fly‑tipping offences

Swansea Magistrates’ Court imposed Criminal Behaviour Orders (CBOs) on Michael Joseph Quilligan, 22, of Western Avenue, Sandfields, and Steven Gilheaney, 26, of Radnor House, Sandfields, when they appeared in court on Thursday, 18 September.

Both men were handed 16‑week jail terms, suspended for 12 months, and ordered to pay £1,465 in prosecution costs each, along with a £154 victim surcharge. They must also complete a 15‑day rehabilitation programme under the Probation Service.

Pattern of dumping

The court heard the pair had been linked to several incidents of illegal dumping, including large amounts of household, construction and garden waste abandoned at sites in Sandfields, Margam and Aberavon between 2023 and early 2025.

Investigations by Neath Port Talbot Council’s Waste Enforcement Team found the men had been paid to remove waste from businesses and private addresses, but instead of disposing of it legally, they dumped it on disused land.

Court order

The two‑year CBO prevents Quilligan and Gilheaney from collecting or transporting waste anywhere in Neath Port Talbot, unless employed by a licensed scrap metal business. Breaching the order could result in further prosecution and prison sentences.

Council response

Cllr Scott Jones, Neath Port Talbot Council’s Cabinet Member for Streetscene, said:

“I want to congratulate our Waste Enforcement Team for yet again bringing before the courts those who seriously damage our environment by dumping waste. It’s clear the courts are taking these offences seriously with the sentences, fines and Criminal Behaviour Order imposed in this case.”

#Sewage dumped illegally in #Windermere over 3 years

by Joe Crowley
October 17, 2024

"A water company repeatedly dumped millions of litres of raw sewage illegally into one of #ngland's most famous lakes over a three-year period, the BBC can reveal.

"More than 140 million litres of waste were pumped into Windermere between 2021 and 2023 at times when it was not permitted, our analysis shows, and #UnitedUtilities failed to report most of it.

"It means the company's #IllegalDumping of #sewage into the lake went on for far longer, and was far more extensive, than was previously known.

"United Utilities said some of its sewage releases into #Windermere were 'potentially non-compliant' but that it #SelfReports 'over 94% of potential pollution incidents to the #EnvironmentAgency'.

"Matt Staniek, a campaigner against sewage pollution and founder of #SaveWindermere, said Windermere was 'the jewel in the crown of the #LakeDistrict #NationalPark, and it's being used as an open sewer'.

"It is sometimes necessary to release sewage into rivers and lakes to stop the wastewater system from being overwhelmed by #HeavyRain but this #pollution can damage the environment, causing harmful #AlgalBlooms and even killing fish.

"In January this year - after BBC Panorama revealed the company had downplayed the severity of dozens of #pollution incidents, some involving Windermere - United Utilities retrospectively reported some discharges into the lake from October 2023 onwards."
