‘Lawless’ loggers?

'Rogue' government agency Forestry Corporation of NSW accused of more illegal logging

"There are fresh claims that a NSW government agency is illegally logging the habitats of threatened species. A New South Wales government agency has now racked up more than $1.1 million in penalties for more than a dozen instances of unlawful activity in less than five years, including seven criminal convictions. It also faces three more criminal prosecutions that could result in up to $12 million in additional penalties, if found guilty, and is under investigation for a further 18 potentially-illegal actions."

"That agency is the state government-owned logging company, Forestry Corporation of NSW...The ongoing breaches by Forestry Corporation, despite strong enforcement action by the EPA, suggested there was an ingrained culture of non-compliance at the logging agency.'"

🪵Keen to uncover the mesmerizing meanings behind #biodiversity's terms?💡

#DYK Illegal logging is a global problem? 🌎

It damages #forests, devastates communities and wildlife, & aggravates #ClimateChange.🌡️

But what's the definition of #IllegalLogging according to IPBES?⤵️

A square image depicting a forest scene with freshly cut logs in the foreground. The atmosphere appears misty, suggesting a cool, damp environment. A text overlay in the upper portion reads "ILLEGAL LOGGING" in large, white, capital letters. Below, a definition is provided: "The harvesting, processing, transporting, buying or selling of timber in contravention of national and international laws." The IPBES logo is placed in the top right corner, integrating into the image's naturalistic theme.

The struggle between Indigenous people, loggers and pastoralists

"UN report in 2021 described the Indigenous peoples of Latin America as the “best guardians” of the rainforests." They "protect 80% of the remaining biodiversity on the planet. At least 600 of us land defenders have been murdered since 2014."

‘Not a great legacy’: Troubled state-owned VicForests to close within months

"Victoria's troubled state-owned forestry operation will close on June 30 after years of financial losses and allegations of mismanagement and spying on environmentalists. In the 2022-23 financial year, VicForests returned a net loss of $60.1 million, despite receiving a $149 million bailout from the state government."

"VicForests described the financial result as having been “fundamentally impacted by litigation” brought by environment and community groups against its logging operations."

"Across the state, 1.8 million hectares of public land had been available for timber harvesting. The government will establish an advisory panel to consider what parts of this land could be turned into national parks"

"The government-owned business harvests, sells and oversees the regrowth of timber from state forests."

"The hollows would have been visible when the tree was standing."

"Forestry Corporation NSW sentenced for felling hollow-bearing trees in Mogo State Forest. FCNSW was fined $20,000 and ordered to pay more than $84,000 in legal costs to the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA)."

FCNSW "was also ordered to widely publicise the judgement on its social media accounts and through a paid advertisement in the local newspaper and the Sydney Morning Herald within 60 days of the judgement."

"Under the Coastal Integrated Forestry Operations Approval (CIFOA), the state-owned timber corporation responsible for managing more than 2 million hectares of public land is required to retain any hollow-bearing trees during harvesting operations. Such hollows typically form in trees more than 150 years old."

"Hollow bearings are protected in NSW legislation because they take so long to form, and more than 300 Australian native species rely on them for shelter.
