Brigid’s Cross Tutorial

"In Ireland #Candlemas (or pagan #Imbolc) is celebrated as St Brigid’s feast day. It’s a holiday where the returning of the light and the nature after the dark winter is celebrated. A typical symbol for this holiday is the Brigid’s cross (or Brigit’s cross), a four-ended cross made of straw or rushes, with a knotted pattern in the middle. Traditionally the crosses are made on the holiday and set over doorways and windows to protect the home from fire or any kind of harm.

There are many different variations of Brigid’s crosses. The Brigid’s Cross tutorial I’m showing here is the most common."

#FolkloreThursday #Celtic: `The Mound of Hostages on the Hill of #Tara is aligned with #Samhain. It was constructed over a burial chamber which dates to 3000BC. It stands 15m wide, and 3m high, and the passage extends to 4m long.
It is estimated that between 300-500 burials took place there, most of them cremated and their ashes and grave goods placed beneath the passage floor. Burials were also found within the structure of the mound itself, including the body of a teenage boy who was accompanied by some very high status items including a magnificent bead necklace, a bronze knife, and a bronze awl.
But the most interesting thing about the mound is that it is aligned so that its passage admits the rays of the rising sun at #Imbolc and #Samhain. What could the significance of this be? Perhaps, if Samhain was thought of as a liminal time, when the veil between the mortal world and the #Otherworld was at its thinnest, and the dead walked the Earth to visit their families, the rising sun on the morning of Samhain might awaken them and invite them out. `

Australian Forests now brighten with the colour yellow, as a thousand different species of Acacia come into flower. Imbolc falls about halfway between winter solstice and the spring equinox.

#Wattle #Imbolc #Australia #Renewal

The golden wattle (Acacia Pycnantha) is the official floral emblem of Australia. It is a symbol of resilience, hope and renewal. Wattle Day was originally celebrated on 1st August, later moved to 1st September.

All parts of various Acacia species have been used by people for various purposes. The seeds from some specific Acacia species are ground into a flour and cooked like damper, although some are eaten raw or made into a porridge. The gum from some species is also edible.

Various extracts from the bark and the leaves or phyllodes continue to be used by Australian Aboriginal people for a wide variety of medicinal purposes. Green leafy branches of some species may be used to 'smoke' someone who is suffering from a general sickness.

The wood of wattle species has been used to make clubs, spears, boomerangs and shields. Some, such as Acacia melanoxylon (Blackwood), are used to make fine furniture. Tannin has been extracted from the bark of a number of species for use in tanning including Acacia dealbata (Silver Wattle), A. mearnsii (Black Wattle) and A. pycnantha (Golden Wattle).Bride’s or Brigid’s Cross - also Lá Fhéile Bríde (Irish), Là Fhèill Brìghde (Scottish Gaelic), Laa'l Breeshey (Manx). Traditionally woven at Imbolc, they are hung above entrances to provide protection, fertility and blessings throughout the coming year. The four arms of the cross, woven from straw or rushes, are not rigidly parallel to one another, giving the impression of lively motion.

Canada has a Minister of Artificial Intelligence?! 🙄 #ohCanada

Once upon a time, many an #Imbolc ago, I held the first portfolio of Minister of Myth-Information Technology in Wiarton Willie's Shadow Cabinet, so I suppose it is a similar job?

Though beer has become a purely recreational drink over the last century and a half, as changes in food production, water management, and attitudes towards alcohol have phased it out of daily life, for many of our ancestors it was essential – as sacred as fire, bread, and the other building blocks of civilised life.

We are standing on a bush road- a mostly undeveloped roadway through field and woodland on the farm. Here the snow-covered road, with snow ploughed to one side from earlier snow over the season, gently curves across a wide open area of wetland edge. To the right, mostly out of sight, is a strip of woodland, to the left wetland, some open grassy with willows ahead on the left which hide the road's curve. Straight ahead is a patch of mixed woods with poplars and spruce, some quite old/large. The ground is nearly smooth white, the trees all quite heavily frosted and snow coated, varying with exposure from white through silver and pewter to some darker lightly frosted spruce.

🧵 I had a bunch of short videos over the last few weeks- showing some of our #winter #weather- strong #wind, trees down #frost #snow etc + the Cross-quarter Day #Meteņi #Imbolc #WaitingForSpring
I pulled it all together in a blog post with videos, more pics and blabber.

I'm the bit monkey for the blog #wordsByTerryl from #MoonLitPress . I also do the graphic art work using #inkscape and we publish using #writefreely.

This article shares a witchy Imbolc ritual as a bonus posting. It is a prayerful recognition and celebration of the subtle turning of the seasons. Spring cleaning, if you will, in a spiritual sense.

The title graphic for the imbolc blog posting.
it a wide image with a pagan wheel on the year in the middle with the imbolc season highlighted. There is a candle flame on either side in limbo.
The whole thing is surrounded with a green and yellow border. In the to lower corners is a brown graphic of an acorn and the empty hat of another acorn.

is that time when seasons blend and interweave snow with the luminous sense of early spring. I love the lightness of : their grace aloft whilst yielding to gravity. They, like the wings of the barn owl, have silencers...
In the meantime, my avian garden dwellers wander and feast around the trees. 16 Feb 2025.

🧵 2- So, Happy Waiting for Spring (this is what #Latvians call this Cross-quarter, unlike the British #Imbolc, which sees #spring already arriving!) for all of us in still cold places 🙂 for those of you actually seeing spring, Happier still! ( and Welcome/Waiting For Autumn for those on the other side of the world 🙂

3- almost the same view as photo 1 in first post (they are numbered in the alt, whether or not they appear in the same order in your display) but a little wider view, so the mound and trees behind it are farther away, and we see some of the dip in the ground, which is the man-made cattle water hole-- just a lower area in the snow, with bits of dry grass showing through. It is sunset, the snow is all dusky shadowed blue with an orange glow where the sun hits it in high spots. The sky is lightly overcast with fine lines of clouds from one side to the other. From the top down, the cloud is pale grey then smokey grey through purply grey, pale stripes, coral to orange with muted violet stripes a bit of distant fluffy cloud catching some golden highlights over the mountains on the horizon. The mountains are hazed and blend in to the puply orange sky. To the right a white ball of sun with golden halo and white and gold bar above it hangs just above some bare trees in the middle distance.4- similar scene to photo 3, but this one is zoomed and cropped so we just see a bit of shadowed snowy pasture, low dark willows with some frost highlighted, then the hazed mountains, a few fluffy clouds above them, linear cloud above that. This is the sunset zone and the entire band of sky we can see is orange with purply lines and paler bands, the mountains blending in to these colours- as if an orange filter were put on the photo over a blue, grey and violet background.

🧵 1 Here we are, more or less halfway between Winter Solstice + Spring Equinox! (Thanks to @mirabilos I've recently learned more about the calculation of #CrossQuarter Days: it's not so straightforward!)
Anyway, for me a general idea of mid-way works- I'll make my natural observations over several days anyway, and if I have time/ energy for ritual, it will depend on work/weather!

1-A bit of a mound rises from a snowy pasture- where the soil was piled when a cattle watering dugout was made long ago. It's a late winter afternoon, maybe an hour from sunset and the many little lumps and crests and ridges in the snow (made from cattle tracking around then wind blowing snow) on the mound have deep blue shadows on this side away from the sun. Behind the mound we can see a bit more of the snowy pasture then a line goes all the way across of low dark willows with here and there- mostly to the right- some smallish poplars sticking out above. We can't see how far this treed area goes exactly, but get a glimpse of another sliver of silvery snow much farther back where the ground rises a bit. Farther still are more shadowy trees and on the horizon, barely discernible, we see the foothills blue/hazy blending into the partly clouded sky (mountains behind invisible in cloud). A Line of modest fluffy clouds caps a slightly darker blue-grey with sunset highlights area above the mountains, and above those clouds the sky is faintly overcast pale grey with a hint of violet-coral!2-Across an area of rather smooth snow broken by many small poplar suckers along with occasional other small woody things and the occasionalbit of dry grass or thistle, a loose row (a few metres wide) of youngish (maybe mid-size in diameter, at most, many skinnier) but tall follows a fenceline from left to right. Beyond we see more snowy ground and more distant low willows and trees. The soft barely golden white ball of sun shines between the trunks and branches from a dull blue sky with bits of cloud, a little less than halfway up the trees as it westers, casting long blue linear shadows from the trees on the snow in the foreground.
