“[W]hat’s always fascinating is that sometimes you think you know what something sounds like and do the thing that produces the sound you think you will get, and then you don’t get it. There are always variabilities, variations, and things you didn’t expect… They always lead you to explore something differently. I think the joy is in the fact that even though my vocabulary is relatively static, what happens, without fail, always brings me to places I haven’t been before. I don’t know why, but it happens. I think it has to do with having an understanding that when something unexpected happens, you can make it into something interesting.”- Fred Frith

“When playing a solo piece, I don’t write notation because it does not need to be communicated to anyone else. I only write down words. Just a list of timestamps and words to describe the sounds I’m going to move through. These are notes that only I would understand. They’re typed out like a setlist. It’s just abbreviated little notes to myself that probably wouldn’t even make sense to anyone else, and that’s kind of the point of this music. Nobody else is going to play these pieces. It’s almost like folk music in that way. ” - Jessica Pavone

As expected, the Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra with Pat Thomas gig this afternoon was wonderful. Two longish sets mixing fully improvised playing with pieces of more composed music (still with some free elements). Thomas is a real force of nature, mesmerising to watch and hear and, in combination with the GIO, that force feels unstoppable. I just wish it hadn’t stopped!

I'm looking forward to the Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra with Pat Thomas gig at St Luke's in Glasgow tomorrow. It promises to be really special and at the very civilised time of 1.30pm!

"[It] celebrates the music of Thelonious Monk, presenting new compositions featuring a double concerto for real and imaginary pianists, Monkish dreamscapes, and a piece that merges every Thelonious Monk composition in a joyous mélange."

One week from today. I'll be supporting Derek Monypeny and my regular collaborator Kevin Corcoran on their southwest US duo tour. My first time playing at the great 2220 Art & Archives in Los Angeles's Historic Filipinotown.

An inset box contains swooping melted ribbon patterns in kool-aid red and electric blue, set off against bits of black. It's buoyant and playful while still somewhat minimal. Reminiscent for me of some mid-20th century abstract animation.

Eastern Saga: Live At Tusk by Konstrukt, Otomo Yoshihide, released on KarlRecords in 2020.

"‘Eastern Saga: Live at Tusk’ collides the guitar/turntables of Japanese experimental music dynamo Yoshihide against the free swarming might of Istanbul’s Konstrukt. It’s Konstrukt’s 4th live expo on Karlrecords following previous actions with Kenji Haino and Ken Vandermark, and catches them in a furious mood, no doubt egged on by the assembled Geordie mutants in the crowd as well as Otomo Yoshihide’s energies, driving them to roiling peaks of free jazz rock and psych squall, and one killer stretch of motorik steppers velocity that spanners out into killer breakbeat duelling between the two drummers, and unravelling into tattered reverse loops and plumes of fire guitar and sax by the end." New #review today: "In my review of their earlier release, The Call of a Crumbling World, I mentioned that it would be the first of a series of #InclusionPrinciple recordings scheduled for release in 2025; now a few months later, Clarino Oscura and Quantised Entanglement are out, and they couldn’t be more different from one another." #ExposeOnline #ImprovisedMusic #AvantGarde expose.org/index.php/articles/

What can I do if I had only one portable keyboard and an old laptop? Here another early stage test of my new solo project. An AKAI LPK25 provides pitch and arpeggiator, while sounds are generated using Modartt's Pianoteq and @SurgeSynth on a 13 yo laptop running @mxlinux and Reaper.
Thank you to Toinen Kerros for providing the wonderful space and P.A. and Simone Spampinato for the video and tech assistance.

New #review today: "#Potamos is a Greek quintet, part of the #AesthetikoMusiciansCollective, playing in what seems to be an improvisational #jazz style, somewhat informed by Middle-Eastern sounds, though not to the point where one might call the four tracks at hand World Music, mainly because it’s done mostly with your standard jazz instrumentation." #ExposeOnline #ImprovisedMusic #AvantJazz #GiladAtzmon expose.org/index.php/articles/

@madwort

The cover of the Creatures of Tooth digital release. A partial photograph of a demolition site printed in bright orange ink, with black text in the top right corner saying 'CREATURES OF TOOTH'.

I think this already reached 3 of the 4 people who care about such things on fedi, but I'm holding out for that 4th.

New recording by Fred Lonberg-Holm and me. Cello and alto saxophone, covering some diverse territory. Priced to move, at a cool $0 or more.
