A right-wing government is forcing the most vulnerable people to find cheaper housing - which often doesn't even exist.

In the media, the tightening of income support has been overshadowed by other social security cuts and their effects.

Last autumn, the governing parties voted to tighten the criteria for accepting housing costs above the rent limit for income support, and now the change is taking concrete shape.

For example, I have been contacted by a man who should now be able to find rented accommodation that is €230 cheaper. He had applied for a flat in accordance with Kela's guidelines, but the offers exceeded the limit considered reasonable in his locality, where the rent for a two-person flat must not exceed €895. Kela also did not accept the specific reasons he gave for living in his current home:

A child living there every other week was not a valid reason. Neither was illnesses that caused inability to work ten years ago. Neither was the lack of credit information.

There is also a story of a person with serious mental health problems in the public domain. His application included statements from both a psychiatric social worker and several specialists about his situation, as well as reasons why he should be allowed to continue living in his current home, which were not sufficient for KELA.

The rent is €350 for one person who contacted me. He should move to a cheaper one(!) because the electricity bill for heating a wooden house is no longer taken into account for income support if it exceeds the rent limit. There have also been contacts about the interpretation of water charges. As Kela only accepts separate water charges, even families have been advised to move to cheaper accommodation simply because water is currently included in the rent.

In the past, Kela officials were able to exercise more individual discretion. If the use of reason is no longer allowed in future, words will not be enough to describe the bureaucratic chaos that will ensue.

The governing parties claim that income support will not be cut and that the most vulnerable will be looked after. Here we see it again and we will continue to highlight these experiences.

I will also submit a written question to the government on the application of the Income Support Act.
