#WinonaLaDuke: #DAPLPipeline Lawsuit Against #Greenpeace Aims to Silence #Indigenous #Protests, Too

#DemocracyNow, March 04, 2025

"As the oil company Energy Transfer sues Greenpeace over the 2016 #StandingRock protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline, we speak with #IndigenousActivist Winona LaDuke, who took part in that historic uprising. LaDuke is an enrolled member of the Mississippi Band of #Anishinaabe who lives and works on the White Earth Nation Reservation and was among the thousands of people who joined the protests in solidarity with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe to protect water and Indigenous lands in North Dakota. She highlights the close links between North Dakota’s government and Energy Transfer and says that while the lawsuit targets Greenpeace, Indigenous water and land defenders are also on trial. 'North Dakota has really been trying to squash any kind of #resistance,' says LaDuke. 'If they can try to shut down Greenpeace, they’re going to shut down everybody.'"

Biden grants activist Leonard Peltier clemency to finish life sentence at home
American Indian Movement activist was sentenced to life in prison for killings of 2 FBI agents

The Associated Press · Posted: Jan 20, 2025 1:05 PM

"Just moments before leaving office, U.S. President Joe Biden commuted the life sentence of Indigenous activist Leonard Peltier, who was convicted in the 1975 killings of two FBI agents.

"Peltier was denied parole as recently as July and wasn't eligible for parole again until 2026. He was serving life in prison for the deaths of the agents during a standoff on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.

"He will transition to home confinement, Biden said in a statement.

"Biden has set the presidential record for most individual pardons and commutations issued. He announced on Friday that he was commuting the sentences of almost 2,500 people convicted of nonviolent drug offences. He also gave a broad pardon for his son Hunter, who was prosecuted for gun and tax crimes.

[...]

"The fight for Peltier's freedom is entangled with the Indigenous rights movements. Nearly half a century later, his name remains a rallying cry.

"An enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa in North Dakota, Peltier was active in the American Indian Movement, which began in the 1960s as a local organization in Minneapolis that grappled with issues of police brutality and discrimination against Native Americans. It quickly became a national force.

"The movement grabbed headlines in 1973 when it took over the village of Wounded Knee on the Pine Ridge reservation, leading to a 71-day standoff with federal agents. Tensions between the movement and the government remained high for years.

"On June 26, 1975, agents went to Pine Ridge to serve arrest warrants amid battles over treaty rights and self-determination."

So, many years ago, I created a meme with the late #CorbinHarney, spiritual leader of the #WesternShoshone, and #IndigenousActivist against #YuccaMountain and #NuclearDisarmament. The only copies of the meme are very low resolution, so I decided to re-do the meme with a new image and type at a higher resolution.

“It’s in our backyard… It’s in our front yard. This #nuclear contamination is shortening all life. We’re going to have to unite as a people and say no more! We, the people, are going to have to put our thoughts together to save our planet here. We only have One Water… One Air… One #MotherEarth.”

A black and white photograph of a Native American man wearing a button shirt, a beaded necklace, jeans, and a white vest with fringe. He is holding two wings, one in each hand, and is speaking. Around him are crowds of people who are listening to his words. They are in a desert in the southwestern United States.

To the right of the image are the words:
“It’s in our backyard… It’s in our front yard. This nuclear contamination is shortening all life. We’re going to have to unite as a people and say no more! We, the people, are going to have to put our thoughts together to save our planet here. We only have One Water… One Air… One Mother Earth.”

#Montagnard #IndigenousActivist arrested in #Thailand, resists being extradited to Vietnam

He was convicted in Vietnam for alleged terrorism

Written by Mong Palatino
Posted 17 July 2024

"Despite his refugee status, Indigenous activist #YQuynhBdap, who advocates for the Montagnard and #Ede Indigenous groups, was arrested on June 11 in Thailand and is currently facing deportation proceedings after the Vietnamese government sought his #extradition.

"Montagnard refers to around 30 Indigenous tribes living in #Vietnam’s central highlands, which includes the Ede ethnic group. These ethnic minorities face discrimination and violence linked to land conflicts and state-backed attacks.

"After years of being persecuted as a youth activist, Y Quynh Bdap escaped to Thailand in 2018 and was granted refugee status by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Office. In 2019, he founded the Montagnards Stand for Justice (#MSFJ) which advocates for peaceful reforms and human rights protection for Indigenous communities. However, as of March 2024, the Vietnam authorities have designated the MSFJ as a #terrorist group.

"In June 2023, riots erupted in Dak Lak province which led to an attack on a government office. Six Montagnard Indigenous people were charged with terrorism in relation to this incident including Y Quynh Bdap who was tried in absentia. In January 2024, Y Quynh Bdap and his co-accused were convicted and sentenced to ten years in prison.

"MSFJ described its inclusion in the list of terrorists as an 'illogical, unjust accusation' and called out authorities for using 'false accusation to suppress religious freedom and peaceful movements.' It asserted that it is committed to peaceful reforms.

"…from the outset, MSFJ has set clear objectives to struggle through peaceful means, in accordance with the law. This is evidenced by hundreds of violation reports sent to the United Nations. It is a vivid testimony to the peaceful, compassionate spirit of this group. They dare to fight for the truth, for the rights of prisoners of conscience and oppressed people, even sacrificing themselves to cross the border to Thailand and continue to speak up for their compatriots.

"After his sentencing in January, Y Quynh Bdap was forced to restrict his movements in Thailand for fear of being arrested and sent back to Vietnam.

In a video recorded on June 7, Y Quynh Bdap maintained his innocence and defended his advocacy for the protection of Indigenous rights."

Remembering #KleeBenally, For the People

"A true revolutionary is guided by great feelings of love" -- #CheGuevera

by Shannonlynn Chester, via #CensoredNews
June 13, 2024

"In February, a local publication ran a piece on Klee that said 'RAGE. In Beauty'. But sometimes the world didn't see him (or any of us associated with him) that way. His way of 'raging in beauty' didn't fit into what society saw as normal or peaceful at all, but I'm reminded today that Klee saw beauty in everything. If it didn't exist in something, he did something about it, he spoke the truth on it. He was someone who lived and breathed beauty, love, kinship, respect ... he embodied hózhó -- we should all be like that.

"I'm one of three still here at #TaalaHooghan Infoshop. I'm still holding it down, I've been here consistently since January. There are times I have to take a one or two week break, as it's exhausting 'work' ... not just physically, but emotionally and mentally as well

"Most days I can just be here on autopilot -- cleaning, organizing and packing but some days are different ... because I come across things and will reminisce about everything we've done here in the name of #MutualAid. I've spent 4 years here, I know every crack in the floor, every hole in the wall. Ever since Klee joined the ancestors, it hasn't been easy to be here but most times it is healing and has just become part of my grieving process, I guess.

"Some days unsheltered relatives come by and I have to tell them that we're shutting down. Every so often someone will come by asking for #Klee, sometimes just describing him -- saying that he helped them years ago and they want to thank him. I'm still having to break the news to others here and there. There's been a lot of tears shed outside in the parking lot ... from that we gain strength and resilience and speak affirmations to do better. And be better.

"I'm finally getting down to the last of the supplies that we were distributing as #KinlaniMutualAid and #DinéHealersRelief (as part of a larger collective and network we started called #IndigenousMutualAid). Along with the help of a few individuals, I've been making sure it's all getting back into the community somehow, because everything here has always been for the people."

In Memory of #KleeBenally: An Interview with #Blackfire

January 3, 2024
via @CrimethInc

"Early on December 31, 2023, the #Diné land defender, organizer, author, and musician Klee Benally passed away at the age of 48. In his memory, we present an interview that we conducted in 2009 with Klee and his siblings in the punk band Blackfire. At that time, they had already been making music together for twenty years.

"A dedicated and demanding proponent of #IndigenousLiberation, Klee fought on a wide range of fronts, emphasizing the importance of both concrete and spiritual forms of #resistance and critically exploring the possibility of an #IndigenousAnarchy.

"As the eulogy published by Anarchist Agency recounts,

"'Klee was living in Flagstaff, Arizona at the time of his passing. He was born October 11, 1975 in #BlackMesa and worked nearly all his life at the front lines of struggles to protect #Indigenous sacred lands. Klee was a driven organizer with projects such as #IndigenousAction Media, #Kinlani #MutualAid, and #IndigenousMutualAid. He also helped establish #TáalaHooghan Infoshop, #ProtectThePeaks, and #OuttaYourBackpackMedia, and volunteered with #HaulNo.'

"'Haul No is a campaign against #UraniumMining in the #GrandCanyon. #LandDefense struggles were especially important to Klee.

"In addition to all this, Klee was a filmmaker and musician. You can view many of Klee’s films here. In addition to his decades in Blackfire, Klee also played in the band Appropriation and recorded various solo projects."

#KleeBenally, #CulturalAdvocate and #LandDefender, dies at 48

By Kianna Joe | Dec 31, 2023

KINŁÁNÍ-DOOK’O’OOSŁÍÍD – "Klee Benally died the morning of Dec. 31, 2023. He was 48.

"Benally’s family will be having a family meeting later today to share a formal announcement of Benally’s life, according to an #IndigenousAction social media post.

"Benally was from #Dziłyíjiin, Arizona. He was from the Tódích’íi’nii and #WanderingPeople clans. He relocated to #Kinłání, where he proudly stood tall with Dook’o’oosłííd.

"In his last interview with the Navajo Times on Dec. 7, Benally credited his father, #JonesBenally, a respected and known #hataałii, who shared the #Diné traditions and culture with him.

"Klee Benally’s teachings growing up laid a foundation for who he was as a Diné and led to him fighting for the sacred Dook’o’oosłííd.

"'For Diné people, it represents a part of our cosmology and being,' Benally said on Dec. 7.
'Each mountain is a part of our creation account set forward for our boundaries, Diné Bikéyah, where we walk around.'

"Benally described the mountains as leaders that hold and share teachings for Diné.

"Countless comments from people who knew and followed Benally shared their sudden sadness but described Benally as a 'one-of-a-kind' wise son, brother, uncle, or grandpa.

"Along with fighting for sacred elements, Benally was an #artist in many mediums, writer, musician, and filmmaker.

"On Thursday, Dec. 21, Benally launched his book, '#NoSpiritualSurrender,' released in November.

"The book delves into Benally’s experience fighting for sacred places and why he does it to protect #nahasdzáán.

"Benally recounted the many times he had been #arrested in the Dec. 7 interview, along with tying himself to heavy machinery to send a message that he wasn’t going anywhere for the land’s sake.

"Benally’s work reflected his dedication and understanding of fighting for land and its #IndigenousPeoples.

"Benally worked endlessly for the community and land, which are grateful to have been protected by a dedicated Diné."

Warrior #KleeBenally Never Surrendered: A Life of #RevolutionaryLove, Resounding '#RegainYourPower

by Brenda Norrell, #CensoredNews, January 2, 2024

"Our hearts are broken by the sudden passing of our friend Klee Benally. Reflecting on Klee's life, we remember the words of #CheGuevara that the true revolutionary is guided by great feelings of love.

"Klee never surrendered, he never surrendered to #capitalism, the media, or the forces of conformity that sought to change who he was.

"Ultimately, Klee taught us to regain our power, regardless of the road that led us to the present.

"#LouiseBenally, #Dine' of Big Mountain, said, 'Klee was our spokesman and leader. His departure only means we have to rise and carry on the work for justice for #nature and humanity. I will miss him Greatly and Honor him highly.'

"His roots come from Big Mountain, grandson of the late #RobertaBlackgoat.

"'He was an honorable young leader, well respected and moved with a lot of compassion. My nephew brother and my leader. A truly beautiful and amazing person who really lived up to his beliefs, and was not driven by money but by needs and concern, a real warrior.

"'He was our shining Star, he will continue to shine on us from the other side.

"'He always honored me, I will miss that,' Louise said.

"#MichelleCook, Dine', said, "We are deeply saddened and shocked by the news of the passing of our beloved warrior Klee Benally. We ask for prayers for his family during this time. For decades Klee led an uncompromising position, for the liberation of our peoples and lands developing and synthesizing an embodied praxis of #Indigenous-based political, economic, and social resistance against all forms of #SettlerColonialism that degrades people and the planet.

"Klee was our North Star guiding with his heart and mind. While some may not have shared his positions, no one can question his dedication, determination, and sheer drive to protect his people despite the risks and danger.

"He risked his life through forms of #CivilDisobedience and #DirectAction to protect our Dook’o’oosłiid, #HolyMountain, from development to maintain our ceremonial practices and way of life.

"Klee taught us all to be brave to fight against #genocide, the co-optation of our movements by the non-profit #IndustrialComplex. To be steadfast in what is right and wrong. To honor our ancient law and the sacred teachings of our ancestors and Grandmothers. His departure leaves a void in #DinehNation and #IndianCountry," Michelle said.

"Now with his absence from this material plane, we have no choice but to pick up his work, pick up the slack, carry on, and continue our journey as Dineh in a beautiful way.

"Klee's development and articulations of Indigenous peoples and archaism remain relevant for social movements within and outside of #TurtleIsland.

"He will forever remain in our hearts and minds as a guiding light and a growling voice, screaming freedom, for our earth and peoples. We love you Klee.

"Rest now our sacred warrior. Your work is done. We are so proud of the legacy you cultivated and left for this world. Journey well our sweet warrior until we meet again in the great Star Camp beyond," Michelle said.

"Klee passed to the Spirit World on Sunday, after being hospitalized.

"We send our sincere condolences to his family, his wife Princess, family Jones, Berta, Jeneda and Clayson, and all those who knew and loved him.

"From locking down in U.S. #BorderPatrol headquarters in Tucson, to chaining himself to equipment in defense of Sacred San Francisco Peaks, to battling the auctioneers of the sacred ceremonial items in Paris, and leading the #HaulNo movement to protect the #GrandCanyon region from #UraniumMining, to feeding the #unsheltered in Flagstaff, and standing strong for #Palestine, Klee's powerful actions remain a moving force to resound, and rivet us all, to struggle for a world without compromise.

"Klee recognized that the non-profit industry was designed to water down the resistance and turn the sacred movements into an ATM machine for a select few.

"Fly high, my sweet friend."

Wasté Win Young:
'Take Courage, Keep Going for our #Takojas'

By Wasté Win Young
#Lakota, #StandingRock
November 10, 2023

"The showing of the documentary 'End of the Line' in Sewanee, Tennessee was probably the most emotional response I’ve witnessed and felt. A lot of people came up to me afterward and they were visibly crying. One young woman couldn’t talk and I hugged her for a long time. She said that she and her mom had gone camping in North Dakota and drank water from the #MissouriRiver.

"A lot of the youngins in college had never even heard of #NoDAPL. There was an anthro professor who was so moved. He said he showed his class the documentary last year as well. I felt the love and am beyond thankful. I told them that they could help by submitting comments for the #DAPL environmental impact statement.

"I think my spirit needed this as much as they needed it because yesterday as I got home, I got the word that the Eighth Circuit ruled against #WaterProtectors in Dundon.
This is no surprise in the court of the #colonizer — two of the three judges were appointed by #Trump. One judge was sleeping during the arguments. Smh. Houwn I really cried...

"Despite these decisions made by #WhiteMen who think they are the law and that their say is final — it is not. It never will be.

"I know we have to keep going, that we persevere for our takojas and future generations. Even on the days when I wanna curl up and sob dramatically with my mom and dad or lay in bed with my kids and dogs all day.

"I know that there will be justice for our people and allies in this world and the next. Blíhíčiya — take courage. We keep going."

Waste Win Young, Lakota of Standing Rock, North Dakota, previously served as Standing Rock's Historic Preservation Officer and is a graduate of the University of New Mexico Law School. She is a leading voice for the rights of water in the resistance to the Dakota Access Pipeline.
