The ponies are the size of the toys.

The mass of the planet they are on is actually many times that of earth, and thus, has such large gravity that all the organisms are comparatively small.

This is important, because it explains how the sun is orbiting them the way it is... it's actually a Dwarf Star, with less mass than the planet, and therefore, orbiting the planet.

They need to control it because there's no way an orbital period of one day could be stable.
