I was reading about a PhD in Information Studies program at UCLA. (I recently had an ah-ha moment regarding #InformationStudies) With all my programming classes and interdisciplinary degrees I might stand a chance of getting accepted. But. UCLA is on the complete opposite side of the country. I can't tell you how soul-sucking it is to live in a red state with poor quality universities. It is almost financially impossible for me to move, not to mention leave my family alone.

Folks in this world may be interested to know about the #MellonFoundation funded Radical Librarianship Institute and accompanying community press @ #UCLA #InformationStudies. This will include a full fine press printing lab, too, to be used for UCLA #mlis courses and @calrbs! The Horn Press at UCLA will also emerge back onto the scene. Can’t wait to partner with many of you on this! seis.ucla.edu/news/mellon-foun

Just switched servers, so a re-#introduction! I teach #informationstudies & #digitalhumanities at UCLA, and I'm at work on a book about data in global supply chains. (ETA: shut up.)

I just finished some work, e.g., on shipping data: it turns out cargo ships receive and transmit huge amounts of data. They're "floating data terminals," as one technologist would have it.

Anyway, happy to be here, AMA about supply chains, thanks for having me!

I'm certain this is not an original thought (not least because there is a research website devoted to it here: alt-text-as-poetry.net/ ), but an invitation:

Are any of you #English / #MediaStudies #CreativeWriting / #InformationStudies encountering work on alt text as e.g. poetry or some other kind of distinct literary mode? Strikes me as an interesting and challenging case for the ethics of aesthetic experience.

#introduction Hi everyone! My name is Kai (he/they) and I’m a second year doctoral student at UCLA Information Studies interested in how dominant data regimes impact trans people of color and how might technology be leveraged for liberatory futures. #academia #informationstudies #hci #criticaldata #trans #bipoc #ethicalai #sts
