This piece by Gaby Hinsliff, prompted by an anthropologist's study of English railway enthusiasts, caught my attention.
I'm less interested in considering the question "Should we stop trying to make men more like women?" than in challenging the all too often presented and hopelessly simplistic dichotomy of emotional regulation: "bottling it all up" versus "letting it all out".
Surely we can have a more variegated and sensitive account of how we might or might not express our feelings, one that would allow for individuality, irony, indirectness as well as intimacy, and that would show awareness of both the Scylla of incontinence and the Charybdis of inhibition.
