@amiserabilist @Nickiquote @DJDarren Problem with #Indonesia is that they really hammer diwn #InternetCensorship infrastructure by blocking #DNS and forcing a #Government-owned and cintrolled Resolver down peoples' throats.

@adisonverlice I think that's dangerous disinfo as @torproject actively works against attempts to fingerprint and track #Tor users.

  • I do consider Tor more private than any #VPN simply becaise they can neither ban users nor identify them.

In fact, Tor has been designed with the explicit goal to circumvent #Firewalls and #InternetCensorship methods like #DeepApcketInspection.

As a matter of principle I'd never vouch for any #centralized, #SingleVendor and/or #SingleProvider solution of any kind, including #Session.

  • Tor is sufficiently decentralized in that it is not only completely #OpenSource but has proven to not have SPOFs in the form of maintainers and is able to yeet proplematic folks (unlike #WikiLeaks!)…

@fennix TBH, I think those bs claims should be illegal.

The only valid claims I've seen is that it enables people to circumvent #geoblocking and potentially #InternetCensorship as well as #TrafficDiscrimination due to lack of #NetNeutrality, but those are always to be taken with a truckload of salt!

Most certsinly, there are no "#loglessVPN|s" and no #VPN provider will risk jailtime for any.client

Stuck on Big Tech vs. Big China, America Overlooks the Real Social Media Revolution Happening Elsewhere

The Fediverse, a network of decentralized social media platforms, thrives in Europe and Canada, promoting privacy and user control in contrast to U.S. corporate giants. Factors like European regulations, public funding, and anti-Big Tech sentiment contribute to its success, while the U.S. struggles with corporate dominance and lack of privacy laws, lagging behind in digital innovation.

@wmd @miqokin I've yet to find a nation that criminalizes @torproject but not #VPN|s that facilitate the same...

  • Also commercial VPN providers are relatively easy to detect, filter & block unless they support #SSH-Tunneling.

Whereas #Tor has multiple ways to circumvent #InternetCensorship, includibg multiple #proxy & 9bfuscation systems like #obfs4, #meek, #webtunnel and regular #TorBridges on included, public query-able amd private lists...

Yep, and this is only the beginning of the full Splinternet invocation.

mastodon.neat.computer/@jonah/

Remember, this can and will happen to any non-US service now so if you use let's say Nextcloud, Mullvad or Proton for instance, it can get banned as well if the US government makes a "national security" excuse.

Very chilling times.

**Prediction in the Light of Trends in Blocking Disfavored Content in Dictatorial Regimes**
As the digital landscape evolves, authoritarian regimes are increasingly resorting to censorship to maintain control over the flow of information. With growing concerns over the power of centralized platforms and governments' ability to influence online spaces, decentralized technologies, such as YaCy, offer an alternative model for promoting free speech and information flow. In the face of increased censorship, YaCy's peer-to-peer structure presents a promising solution by decentralizing control and ensuring that data remains distributed and resistant to state-sponsored blocking and surveillance.
However, while decentralized systems provide an escape from authoritarian control, they are not immune to external pressures. States may resort to more sophisticated methods, such as targeted attacks on specific nodes, or attempt to influence the global index by controlling certain nodes within the network. This raises important questions about the resilience of decentralized search engines and the long-term feasibility of these systems in heavily censored regions.
The future of decentralized search engines like YaCy will depend largely on the ability to resist external interference and maintain an independent, distributed infrastructure. It is also crucial that these platforms continue to evolve, enhancing their security and anonymity features to protect users in authoritarian regimes.
**Conclusion:**
The rise of censorship and authoritarian control over digital spaces is a growing challenge for free speech. In this context, decentralized search engines like YaCy offer a beacon of hope by providing alternative means for information exchange. However, their success will depend on technological resilience, community involvement, and the ability to adapt to evolving threats from authoritarian powers.

Russian network filtering is configured in such way, that if some user simply opens phpmyadmin.net in a browser, all Hetzner address space will be blocked for this user.

This could be related to attempts to block Tor Browser, which uses www.phpmyadmin.net as a BridgeDB front. Well, except that they are two different domains that resolve to different addresses :blobcatgooglyshrug:

@chinwagnews Are we talking in human years or ibis years?

None of the politicians squawking in favour of this Age Verification issue are making sense.

Makes you wonder:
- What's it for? Really, apart from appealing to pearl-clutching technophobes who mutter "Won't somebody think of the children?"
- They're talking it up, but can it actually do any good?
- How will it be implemented?
- Can this whacky plan even _be_ implemented by every Tech company around the world to satisfy some knobs in Canberra?
- Why are the ALP and LNP perennially obsessed with censoring what we can do on the Internet, and is this another iteration of the "Great Firewall of Australia", "Filter", and "You Wouldn't Steal a Car" garbage previous governments have attempted?
- How many Cyber Star Rating stickers will I need to certify my Age Verification score?

The ALP and LNP may as well be talking in dog years because their proposed Age Verification legislation is a dog's breakfast.

@steevmi1 @thegibson @hrbrmstr personally, I consider all #VPN that isn't a connection to your own business/home network to a #Snakeoil except when it comes to circumventing #Geoblocking and/or #InternetCensorship and accessing sites & content!

That's why @monocles don't offer a #VPN (They could easily buy that as a white-label/ "Managed Service for Reselling" or shove some stuff in a datacenter and callit a day.

The early discussions about Plex's blockade occurred around 2020, when TMDB was blocked, causing issues for many media management platforms, including Plex, which relied on metadata agents.

Plex.tv blocked by the GFW. Again.

Since around 2020, Plex users in China have faced intermittent disruptions from the GFW, rather than a complete block like services such as Google or Facebook. However, these disruptions have made direct access to plex.tv from China nearly impossible.
