What if we block incoming HTTP traffic from IP ranges owned by large hosting providers and data centres?
I know the strength of the internet is the openness, and yet we have non-human (if you can call it that anymore) traffic consuming a large amount of bandwidth these days.
Rather than getting everyone to bow down to Cloudflare as the trusted gatekeeper, maybe we need to reserve a human segment of the internet. I realize this suggestion is similar to implementing a "great firewall" and would take some navigating.

Possible VPN bans? Now that's a spicy take. Today's 'VPN Day of Action' is urging us to tell lawmakers to keep their hands off our virtual private networks. Who's ready to stand up for online freedom? What's the wildest thing you've *used* a VPN for (hypothetically, of course)?

Much of the AI discourse in Africa follows the development narrative, from a tech determinism point of view.
[..]it takes away the democratic process that needs to go into shaping these technologies in the local context. Are people a part of this?

Privacy Watch: Michigan Bill Seeks to Ban VPNs & Online Content — Why Americans Must Take Action Now
Protecting Digital Freedom Is on the Line
On September 11, Michigan Republican representatives introduced a controversial piece of legislation known as the Anticorruption of Public Morals Act. If passed, this bill would not only ban adult content online but also outlaw VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) — a critical tool millions of Americans use to safeguard privacy, protect identities, and access a free and open internet.
The legislation, supported by six representatives, goes further than past bills in Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi by demanding internet service providers block VPNs entirely, with penalties reaching up to $500,000. This isn’t just about adult content. It’s about setting a precedent that could strip away digital freedoms for every resident in Michigan — and possibly other states if similar bills follow.
Why This Matters to Every American
VPNs aren’t just for bypassing filters. They protect sensitive information on public Wi-Fi, prevent ISPs from tracking your browsing habits, and allow businesses to secure remote work. Blocking them puts everyday people, families, and businesses at risk.
What’s most alarming is how broad this law is. It doesn’t just target adult material — it includes AI-generated content, depictions of transgender individuals, and virtually any tool designed to bypass government-mandated internet restrictions. That means the freedom to learn, connect, and express yourself online could be silenced by political overreach.
A Call to Action
The Anticorruption of Public Morals Act has not yet passed committee or reached the Michigan Senate floor. But as CNET reports, bills like this can serve as templates for other states. If Americans remain silent, these proposals could quickly spread nationwide.
📢 What you can do now:
Stay informed by following updates from organizations like the ACLU and EFF.
Contact your representatives and make your voice heard.
Support digital rights advocacy groups working to preserve internet freedom.
Share information to ensure your friends, family, and community understand what’s at stake.
This isn’t just about Michigan — it’s about whether Americans will allow elected officials to dictate what we can or cannot do online. The time to act is now.

Imagine a militia controlled .fr or .uk.
Unthinkable? For 10 years, that's been the reality in Yemen.
The Houthi militia hijacked the entire .YE domain. They use it to threaten ships with fake .gov.ye emails, surveil Yemenis online, and turn that digital data into kidnappings of activists & NGO workers.
And @ICANN's response? A decade of silence, enabling one of the biggest scandals in internet governance.
The time for silence is over #FreeDotYE
Michigan’s “Anticorruption of Public Morals Act” could ban VPNs + adult content statewide.
- VPN use/sales prohibited, fines up to $500K
- ISPs forced to block VPN traffic
- Blocks AI adult, manga, ASMR, trans depictions
