Invasive lionfish threaten Mediterranean biodiversity. Could eating them be a solution?

Climate change and the opening of Suez Canal have in recent years opened the floodgates to invasive species in the Mediterranean Sea, where they threaten biodiversity.

Consuming invasive species “can turn this challenge into an opportunity... and help limit the environmental threat”.

For years, Christmas Island’s iconic red crabs were pushed to the brink as invasive yellow crazy ants spread across the rainforest. What was once a living, moving forest floor became a silent battlefield, with billions of ants overwhelming native species and collapsing entire ecosystems. Conservation teams tried everything: poison baits, traps, physical barriers. Nothing worked.

Then came an unexpected solution. Scientists introduced microscopic parasitic wasps that targeted the ants’ hidden food source, cutting off their power at its root. Slowly, the ants declined. The forest breathed again. The red crabs returned.

What followed became one of the most dramatic ecological recoveries ever recorded. A reminder that smart science, patience, and working with nature, not against it, can reverse even island-wide environmental collapse.

‘It’s an open invasion’: how millions of quagga mussels changed Lake Geneva for ever.

The molluscs are decimating food chains in Switzerland, have devastated the Great Lakes in the US, and this week were spotted in Northern Ireland for the first time.

A pic from late this summer🌸🍃

This flower, Himalayan balsam or kiss-me-on-the-mountain or "giant balsam" (jättipalsami), is not a native flower in Finland and it has been labeled as one of the invasive species. But it's still beautiful and also very intriguing with it's exploding seed pods and the fact that it can grow over 3m high!

Scientists are proposing a "guided evolution" plan to help our native species fight back against invaders like rabbits & cane toads.
The idea? Use selective breeding or genetic tools to speed up the development of defensive traits in vulnerable native animals within just a few generations.
It raises huge ethical questions, but also highlights the desperate need for new solutions. Our current methods are often failing, and our unique ecosystems are paying the price.
