On this, the fifth anniversary of lockdown in #Peru, we thought it pertinent to share this article published in The Conversation. As readers will be aware, Peru suffered the worst per capita death rate in the world from the Covid-19 pandemic. One of the worst-affected areas was Loreto, especially the Amazonian capital of Iquitos. In just the first wave, 70% of the city’s population was affected.

Iquitos is a lively city. The rattle of motorised rickshaws can be heard from everywhere.
The unique thing about the city is that it is so far away from civilisation in the Amazon basin that it can only be reached by plane or boat across the river.
