Despite #Iran’s internet blackout, I regularly receive text and voice messages from within the country - people talking about life under attack. One was from a forty-something man, who sounded really low.

"I’m freaking out," he says. He describes seeing "a lot of fighter jets" and hearing "five or six explosions".

Although the war itself is in the headlines, "the people inside Iran have been forgotten", he says.

In his view, all the media talks about is what Trump has said and how Iran responded. "Even Iranians abroad are mostly either dancing and congratulating #Israel, the US, and #Trump, or tearing each other apart," he says.

Meanwhile, inside Iran, he is seeing people "nearly break from fear" at the sound of a door slamming. "When I call someone and they don’t answer, I almost have a heart attack," he says.

Offen ist, ob das Einlenken der Iraner ein Zeichen der Schwäche ist oder nur ein Nachjustieren in der Hitze des Gefechtes. Die #IslamischeRepublik mag unter wahnsinnigem Druck stehen – israelische und amerikanische Jets am Himmel, der geistliche Führer tot, die meisten Raketenwerfer zerstört, fast alle Kriegsschiffe am Grund des Meeres. Aber geschlagen ist der Ayatollah-Staat noch lange nicht.

Many people in Iran are still sleeping or just waking up, but I have asked one person in Tehran about how they feel about #Khamenei’s death.

“I can’t believe it. It’s like when they give you such a good news that you don’t even don’t know what to do," they tell me.

"I couldn’t sleep all night, I’m just waiting to start the first day without Khamenei in it. I think the Middle East has become a better place.

"Even [the] world has become a better place now.”

Netanyahu says airstrikes have destroyed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s compound and adds that “all indications show this tyrant is no longer with us”.

While not explicitly confirming Khameini’s death, this is strongest official indication yet that the missing leader is dead.

Khamenei has not been heard from since US-Israeli strikes began and satellite imagery has shown that his secure compound in #Tehran was heavily damaged in the initial barrage.

The images and testimonies we received match accounts from witnesses and human rights groups of a sharp escalation in the authorities’ use of force to lethal tactics, including live ammunition and military-grade weapons, on the evening of Jan. 8.

They add to a growing body of evidence that the Iranian regime’s slaughter of unarmed protesters last month was not lawful policing of political unrest. It was a #massacre, and it should be treated as such.

“This regime must end, and the blood of so many young people must not be trampled,” a surgical nurse in Isfahan wrote in response to our survey. “The world must not reach agreements with this regime and must help the people of Iran overthrow it.”
