As far as I know, as of 2018 the only rural sites from Achaemenid Fars are one or two at Tang-e Bolaghi near Pasargadae (Tomb of Cyrus!). There are fields with Achaemenid potsherds which would be worth excavating but no excavated villages and ranches except Tang-e Bolaghi. barpublishing.com/book/tang-e- #iranistik #iranianStudies #achaemenidEmpire

Fars/Persis in western Iran was the home province of the Achaemenid empire, with a similar land area to Newfoundland. When I received my PhD in 2018, how many rural sites from Achaemenid Fars had been excavated and published (orders of magnitude only, I will post the answer Wednesday). No web searching please! #iranistik #iranianStudies #ancientNearEast #archaeology

New faces at the IFI for the new academic year!

Ilona Chmilevskia joins us as a pre-doctoral researcher to study the transformation of Islamic juridical systems in the eastern Caucasus under the rule of the Russian Empire. She previously studied at HSE University.

Her research to date has included looking at 'holy fool' models of Islamic sainthood among the eastern Caucasian Lezgin cultural/language group, and practices of translation, use, and copying of the Qu'ran in Dagestan, a region which has a long history of Classical Arabic learning stretching back to the eighth century.

Welcome, Ilona!

In August many of us were at the biannual Conference of the Association of Persianate Studies in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Our contributions included a roundtable on Histories and Historiographies of 16th- to early 18th-century Central Asia led by our director, Florian Schwarz, a panel on Central Asian National Identities with our deputy director Ariane Sadjed, and with Jeanine Dagyeli a panel on Capitalism in Turkestan: Foreign Investments and Local Entanglements.

Our Bruno De Nicola, Stefan Kamola, and Sara Mirahmadi also joined a panel on Continuity and Transformation in Persianate Mongol Intellectual History organised by Carina Dreyer, and Robert Steele presented his book on Pahlavi relations with Africa.

Thanks to the hosts and organisers: these vital spaces for sharing our work show the importance of having many and diverse disciplines and scholars coming together to build better research on the Persianate world and its connections!

Iran is facing severe drought. With soaring high temperatures due to climate change, tensions between hydroelectric water use and decreased river flow, and groundwater extraction exhausting reserves, there are a range of potential risks ahead.

In the recent Iran-Israel conflict, being informed on the wider and long-term contexts can help with understanding what's going on and how certain modern alliances or tensions in the region came to be.

One of our specialists on modern Iranian history, Dr. Robert Steele, has recently been talking to the public about the 20th century roots of and precursors to the most recent round of conflict: links to his interviews below (both in German).

Lots of great work on the wider Iranian world at last week's International Medieval Congress.

From the IFI, on Tuesday we had Stefan Kamola speaking on astrology & legitimacy in Mongol contexts, looking at how and why certain cyclical astrological terms and ideas were used for political legitimacy. Meanwhile on Wednesday James Baillie (@JubalBarca) spoke on masculinities in the medieval Caucasus, the problems of assessing medieval gender ideals and why elite masculine prowess culture in this period may have actually helped build links across borders.

An exciting week all round!

We have a new publication in our Iranian Studies Monographs (Veröffentlichungen zur Iranistik) series! "Hybrid Judeo-Persian and Arabic Correspondence: Eight Documents from the Cairo Genizah" provides new editions of critical historic documents.

The Cairo Genizah contains many thousands of documents from the Egyptian Jewish community produced over the centuries: some of the more difficult parts of the collection are documents in Arabic (sometimes Arabic written in Hebrew script), and Judeo-Persian written in Hebrew script. This book publishes new editions of eight documents in this category from around 1000AD, showing elements of mercantile life in Cairo a millennium ago and how different languages were used and interacted.

A new FWF project: "Inscribing Authority: Islamic Rule in Central Asia (10th-13th Centuries) As Reflected in Monumental Epigraphy", conducted by Dr. Viola Allegranzi, is starting at the IFI! The project will look at 10th-13th century Islamic epigraphy in central Asia, and the textual and visual communication strategies it reflects on the part of rulers from that period.

The principles of this project include looking at the epigraphy both as texts and as artefacts, looking at the ways in which these inscriptions took up and used space and attempted to achieve recognition from local communities and power brokers. The project will build an open access database to help facilitate comparative analysis and connect inscriptions to people and places we know of from other sources.
