A ferry service with a large fleet of very fast smaller ships carrying a few dozen cars each would be better. If there was a departure every 30 minutes in both directions, and the journey time was about an hour, it’d be a good service and probably a lot cheaper than any bridge or tunnel over any part of the Irish Sea, except in bad weather, of course. But bad weather often closes bridges anyway.

Somehow this rocky, unforgiving coastline pulls you into it. Strange.

As we approach Dublin, coming up the eastern coastline, the weather was still clear enough to let me get this view of the Wicklow mountains capped with snow as a backdrop to the Arklow (2?) sea-based wind farm, which is still out of action after one of the turbines got struck by lightning and burned to a crisp. At least they've removed the lame blades now, leaving the pylon stub sticking forlornly into the sky).

For #MeerMittwoch here's #Blackpool

We like being beside the sea, and we love a good #pier so we had to walk along the one at Blackpool when we visited in 2010. It, the tower, and the trams were very nice. The rest of the town, though: oh God, no.

It's a bright, sunny day but the colours make it feel a little cold, especially given our exposed position. We're standing on a traditional seaside pier, about halfway along its length and looking directly along the shoreline where the sea breaks on the beach to our right. A small part of the pier structure just sticks out to the left of view but its blocky shadow extends out and down onto the water's surface so we know the sun is at our back but not very high in the sky. The beach we can see to the right is sandy and the small waves breaking to our left carry in for some considerable way to the right so we know this is a shallow stretch of water. That's further shown by the murky colour of the sea, clearly picking up sand and silt as the waves break and roll across the surface. The sky is piercing blue with a few puffs of white cloud nearer us and larger forms towards the horizon.

Lovely Saturday evening, listening to some jazz, drinking barrel-aged stout by the fireplace, and watching live our local seal catch fish at Galway Bay.

If you feel your evening would be better with a seal, here is a livestream link:
