Das Bild zeigt den unteren Teil eines alten, knorrigen Baumes, der von Moos bedeckt ist. Der Baumstamm ist sehr dick und teilt sich in mehrere, ungleichmäßige, vertikale Abschnitte. Auffällig sind große, runde Wülste oder Auswüchse, die sogenannten Maserknollen, die an den Seiten und in der Mitte des Stammes hervorstechen. Diese Wülste sind ebenfalls mit einer dicken Schicht aus hellgrünem Moos überzogen, was einen starken Kontrast zur dunkleren, rissigen Rinde des restlichen Stammes bildet. Die Rinde selbst ist tief gefurcht und weist eine Mischung aus braunen und grauen Farbtönen auf. Im oberen Bereich des Bildes sind einige kahle Äste sichtbar, die vom Stamm abzweigen. Der Hintergrund ist unscharf und zeigt einen Park.
