the babies are getting more confident and now they eat and hangout in the feeding dish area during the day too

(there are 3 babies in this picture, gl distinguishing them from clumps of powdered hemp protein)

In a pile of sphagnum moss there is a small and shallow purple dish. Four isopods are eating nutritional yeast and remains of hemp protein powder - one is a big adult taking most of the free from food space and its accompanied by three babies that are barely distinguishable from the specks of protein and are no longer than the bigger specimen's "vibe feelers" (so called "antennae").

Very calm and slow macro video. Armadillidium versicolor. A small terrestrial crustacean. I find them beautiful. Taken on a concrete base. I prefer natural environments, but if it weren't for the nearby river and lowland deciduous forest, there wouldn't be enough moisture in the air. And this concrete wall wouldn't be covered in moss and lichen either, and this crustacean wouldn't be living here.

me: "I hope a few #isopods will be happy in my terrarium, these popped up in my compost box, at least it's a bit more forest-shaped... I love isopods so much but they don't like to be exposed to the light so I guess I'll just have to trust that they're still be there, down hidden under the wood, living their secret lives beneath the dark earth..."

the isopods in my terrarium: ok kids, family trip to climb up the moss forest!

At least three isopods of different sizes climbing atop the sphagnum most that thrives in my terrarium and grew to the shape of a miniature jungle. The scene is very brightly illuminated by my plant lights.A view from above, clearer without the moist glass in the way.

ok now this is big - I wanted to make sure the water gets underneath the pieces of bark and when I picked one up I noticed this little baby 🥺🥺
(this time it's an actual baby and I'm so excited about that)

I'm holding a small piece of bark in my fingers. In a crevice there is something that looks like a speck of moss, but is actually a tiny Armadillidium vulgare.

The isopods have managed to move a piece of wood - about the size of a pinky finger - an inch across the terrarium floor, on accident or to get better coverage, who's to say. They are strong and determined little suckers!

saw this baby (not really a baby, probably one of the bigger specimens in there) today 🥺

Specimen of armadillidium vulgare 'magic potion' wedged in between bark/sphagnum moss and glass of the enclosure. It's backside is exposed, showing distinct black spots and yellow swirls on white armour, as well as antennae (also known as 'vibe feelers').

A macro photograph of four woodlice on weathered wood. The isopods are arranged in a row and have a characteristic, segmented shell in brownish-metallic tones. Their bodies show clear articulations and an oval, flattened physique. The animals are found on a rough, brown wooden surface with visible grain and small wood particles. The high-quality detailed image reveals the fine structures of the isopods, including their segments and the slightly shiny surface of their armor. A photographer's signature can be seen in the bottom right corner.

Species of #DeepSea Bug The Size of a Small Dog Named For #StarWars Villain
As the head of the animal's carapace resembles the iconic scifi helmet adorned by Star Wars' infamous #DarthVader, Ng and team named the giant woodlice relative Bathynomus vaderi.
Despite being large enough to wear a collar and having a villainous appearance, deep sea #isopods are harmless to humans, feeding on decaying matter like their roly-poly and pillbug land relatives.
