The Istanbul Convention has been in existence since 2011, but Germany only ratified it in 2018.
At the same time, Germany presents itself as a bastion of women's rights and emancipation – so it doesn't quite fit the picture that violence against women continues to be the patriarchal norm.
Prevention receives virtually no funding – on the contrary, it will be cut in 2026 – and of all forms of violence, only physical violence in relationships is really recognised as such.
Protection against violence is also being used as a gateway for expanding the ‘security’ apparatus (more police, more isolation, more camera surveillance, more AI) and as a playground for racist narratives. The new Violence Protection Act also has these flaws.
How can we counteract this and set a course towards liberation from violence? How can we broaden our view of violence protection?

Latvian lawmakers voted on 30 October to withdraw from the Istanbul Convention.
Since then, the president has called for a review of the bill, as protests are planned across the country on Thursday.

Latvia's Saeima (parliament) has voted to withdraw from the 2011 #IstanbulConvention, which protects woman from domestic violence.
The Latvian #misogynists rage at "gender ideology". This slogan is also used by #transphobes in #Ireland & #UK. It comes from the #USA's "christian" right, who want to destroy all women's rights: abortion, contraception, divorce, bodily & financial independence.

Latvia votes to withdraw from the Istanbul Convention.
The Istanbul Convention is a treaty of the Council of Europe that opposes violence against women.
The ballot saw 56 Latvian lawmakers vote to withdraw from the treaty, while 32 want to remain. Two lawmakers abstained.
The vote makes Latvia the first EU member to quit the Istanbul Convention it ratified in November 2024.

I note the Foreign Affairs Committee's decision to advance a bill to withdraw #Latvia from the #IstanbulConvention for first plenary reading tomorrow. I call on parliamentarians to disregard the waves of disinformation and consider the hard-gained protection from gender-based violence for women and girls and the comprehensive framework the Istanbul Convention offers to safeguard #WomensRights.

Parliament might bring a proposal to revoke Latvia's ratification of the convention to the vote, which if passed would be a major, disgraceful step back in terms of protecting basic human rights and the protection of women and victims of violence in the country.
