So, Golda's War Diaries was pretty good! Considering almost every documentary is heavy on negativity about her, I'd heard that this would be some grand redemption of her legacy.

Well, it does have some big revelations about details of decisions, but she doesn't come up smelling of roses. Really, this was an exclusively war-focused film, her domestic agenda was unmentioned - and considering the title, fair enough!

It felt more like a story of Israel needing someone who could make the least worst decisions in a shitty situation where there were no good decisions, and Golda was the best option of a bad bunch. It achieved making this point by totally throwing Moshe Dayan under the bus, who is given less of the benefit of the doubt.

Worth a watch, for sure, but I feel it's unlikely to change any minds - although it might soften a few hearts.

i messed up my viewing. didn't get far enough through the very good earnest high school youth lakorn before the j-dramas started on #JFF2024. so now i have two earnest melodramas, one of which is mostly men shouting at each other very earnestly. i'm finding it hard to take it seriously though so maybe this will work. plus my oxytocin is topped up from the ghost house one.

Wedding High

Sometimes endearing comedy with a kitchen sink plot of several people's stories touched on before it dances away again. It's over full but does tie things together and is ultimately heartfelt.

What were your favourites?
Mine include We Made a Beautiful Bouquet, My Broken Mariko and The Lone Ume Tree. They all felt authentic and very real, and handled difficult subjects and emotions well.

Twenty-Four Eyes

Melodrama that's also very real - anti-war and proto-feminist - from the Golden Age of Japanese Cinema, over-flowing with both love and sorrow.

This is available in a few places outside #JFF2024. Worth seeking out.

Finally watched BL Metamorphosis, which was the sole reason I was going to do anything with #JFF2024 to begin with - it does a really good job of adapting the manga and tightening it up.

Also watched We're Broke, My Lord!, which is a period comedy-dramedy. (It's not quite black comedy but it's sure dark in places.) Fun, all around, and definitely made some twists and turns.

Jungle Emperor Leo

From the 1960s school of What were they on? animation. It's an experience. It's very violent. It's also racist and sexist. Theme is working together to confront enemies.
There are better uses of your time during the festival.

No synopsis on MDL as it's animation.

Well made but I don't get on with business settings and the artificial constructions of the corporate world. Kudos for a resourceful female protagonist fighting for her values and her character's message of choosing what standards to update and what to discard as society changes.

I'm a late comer to checking out the Japanese Film Festival Online 2024 movies, but just watched through BL Metamorphosis tonight!

Wow, what a fantastic live-action manga adaptation. I hadn't prepared to cry in the best of ways this evening, but that was my mistake. Such a touching story about friendship and not missing out on the opportunities to experience the best parts in life.

Aroace woman coping in a world where that's not understood. Striking was two characters in particular who, rather than listening to her when she told them, insisted on redefining her into their world views.
It's an often lonely film, although she's rarely alone. Or at least it felt that way to me.
She did have a supportive friend.

first week of the Great JFilm Binge - 11 films, 2 probably dropped mid-way through, found out my brain doesn't cope well with certain types of animation (which means 1 more might be dropped too), 9 to go including 3 short ones but also a 2 hr 36 min tear jerker. soo sah :)

The Zen Diary

Food, nature, living with the seasons and environment, and a 60 year old man dealing with grief and his fear of his own death. Also, the shallowness of relative 'privilege'. Overall, contemplative and contented.
