uh oh. stopped to accept sensible payment methods (at least for me; reached out to support, so let's see), and is failing automated quoting. i guess it's a good moment to do a new round to see what's the current state of low volume manufacturing in europe. if you folks have any experience or hints to share i would really appreciate it! .

When is a PCBA reorder not a reorder?

When JLCPCB doesn't like their own panelization "the fiducials are near the slots, which will be damaged when molding, and affect SMT" 🤷.

Well, I think I'm done with the circuit and PCB design for my #NeXT #SoundBox mini. But before I order the whole thing from #JLCPCB, I'll sleep on it and check everything again tomorrow. Better safe than sorry. 😃

Sorry - for non techies, this is called a dry joint - the (silver) solder is on the circuit board, and you can see the (yellow) copper on the component, and a line between on those pins. The solder should "wick" up the copper and make a clean joint, this does not, and so does not work.

Our first PCB assembly order from JLCPCB. It only has one chip, a DRAM, and it's just a breakout for plugging into a breadboard.

We're planning to read and write it with an FPGA and access both from an MCU.

This breakout was drawn in Kicad on GNU/Linux.

A close-up of a green circuit board with a rectangular component in the center labeled “RAM1.” Around the rectangular component are numerous circular pads arranged in two columns, each connected to the component by thin lines radiating from the center. These pads are labeled with various identifiers, including “CLK”, “A0” through “A11”, “DQ0” through “DQ15”, “BA0”, “BA1”, “CKEn”, “DQML”, “DQMH”, “n_CS”, “n_WE”, and “n_RAS,” as well as several “Vdd”, “Vss”, and “n_CAS” labels. The text “BCE Coop Inc” appears in white above the central RAM component. The pads are arranged in a structured layout, suggesting a specific pinout configuration for the RAM chip.

Just sent off the #JLCPCB order for my second DIY #MechanicalKeyboard, again a 36-key #ErgonomicKeyboard and self-designed diode-free PCB using #GraphTheory, but this time with Bluetooth (using #ZMK firmware)! astrobeano.blogspot.com/2025/1

Finished a redesign of my first PCB assembly order ever. I'm using JLCPCB and I've ordered the one part in this test design.

I'm waiting for the one part to arrive in their assembly facility in Hong Kong.

This is a 2 layer board to breakout an 8x8 mm DRAM chip with 54 pins so that I can play with it on my breadboard.

This is designed in kicad.

A circuit board layout to breakout a single chip. The board features a central RAM chip surrounded by numerous labeled pins. The pins are organized in two columns, with labels such as "CLK," "A11," "A7," "Vss," "DQ9," "DQ11," "DQ13," "DQ8," "DQ10," "DQ12," "DQ14," "Vss5," "DQ15," "VssQ," "VddQ," "VssQ," "VddQ," "DQ0," "Vdd," "DQ1," "DQ3," "DQ5," "DQ2," "DQ4," "DQ6," "BA0," "A0," "A3," "A2," "Vpp," "A10," "n_CS," "n_WE," "DQ7," "A1," "BA1," "n_RAS," and "DQML." The pins are connected to the RAM chip via red and blue lines, indicating different signal paths. The layout is symmetrical, with the RAM chip at the center, and the pins are labeled in a systematic manner, suggesting a well-organized design.

I'm planning to order my first custom PCB from JLCPCB, which will only have one RAM chip breakout to include on my breadboard prototype. On my breadboard, I've gotten the following working:

- ICE40 FPGA (Architry Cu)
- ESP32-C3 MCU (RISC-V + Wifi/BT)
- OV7670 Camera (640x480 30 FPS)

I'd like to use the FPGA to read the camera data and store it in a RAM. Also, I'd like the MCU to be able to read single pixels at ~1000 Hz from the RAM. I plan to use the FPGA to manage the interface between the MCU and the RAM as well.
At first, my choice of RAM was a small RAM that is hard to find with a long lead time with JLCPCB. Now, I'm planning to use a slightly larger RAM with shorter lead time. This is the RAM part I'm looking at:

digikey.com/en/products/detail

The design in the image is the old part. I'm now starting a redesign of the PCB with the new slightly larger RAM.

A jpretty rendering of the top view of a green breadboard with 24 breadboard holes on the left and right (total 48). One 6 by 8 mm chip footprint is in the middle and labelled "RAM1". The top of the chip has the label "BCE Coop Inc".

My first #JLCPCB order arrived today and - presto! A tiny little #LED pixel board now exists.

Both RGB LEDs operate in parallel for additional brightness, although having played with it, it's really bright so one might be enough. I could simply not fit one LED when I solder the rest up.

It's driven by a PWM driver and the colour mixing is surprisingly ok.

A single pinprick light source on the end of a long, thin, black cable. What could it be for?! Well, all will be revealed in good time.

A photo of a small printed circuit board holding two clear LEDs, six resistors and an IDC header to which a four core multi core cable is connected. The screen printing proudly pronounces this to be the LED PIXEL BOARD v1.

Turns out: I mistakenly swapped the top and bottom layer. 🤪
