Some of you may have heard of the Blue Eye, Brown Eye Experiment but have any of you actually lived it? When I was around ten, my teacher became upset after a fight broke out at school (presumably between boys of different colors). She gave our class a lesson in racism by using a modified (and gentler) version of Jane Elliot's program. There is some disagreement on whether it is harmful to the students. In my case, absolutely not. It fueled in me an aversion for inequality.

What is happening now in our schools breaks my heart. They are taking away books, history, equal rights, and the freedom to teach compassion and acceptance. My hope is that these students have at least one teacher fiery enough to teach them as mine did. I don't remember her name or even her face, but that lesson remains, and I thank her.
