Happy Friday from Japan!

For easing into the weekend, a set of film photography from Rokkakudo Temple in Kyoto, famous as the birthplace of Ikebana. Details in ALT texts.

The name “Rokkakudo” refers to the distinctive hexagonal shape of the temple’s main hall, best seen from above (from an adjacent tall building). On street level, the fairly compact temple grounds provide for a pleasant and quiet stroll in an urban setting.View of the temple's gate from a side street. There is an adjacent Starbucks that has temple-facing seating inside, or you can just enjoy the view of the main hall through the shop windows.

This evening, I have a photo for you of a pretty Japanese temple in ... (drum roll) ...

Düsseldorf, Germany.

It is part of EKŌ-Haus, a center for Japanese art, culture and education.

Good morning from Tokyo!

"The Reader" is a photo I took at Kenninji. The oldest Zen temple in Kyoto has beautiful halls, gardens, paintings of dragons, and a gilded folding screen adorned with a famous image of the wind and thunder gods.

At one of the main halls of Kenninji Temple in Kyoto, Japan, an elderly man wearing a hat is seated on a bench and reading a book. He is seen from a position inside the tatami-floored hall, between Japanese-style sliding doors that are partially open, and allow a view towards a green Japanese garden. We can also see some of the hall's historic interior wooden architecture details.

Good morning & happy Monday from Tokyo! A bit overcast today - so if you need an umbrella, I have a shop for you right here. This is along the approach to Kawasaki Daishi Temple in Kanagawa Pref., whose main gate is seen in the back.

In this photo taken on the approach road to Kawasaki Daishi Temple in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture, we can see a line of shops on both sides of the street. In the foreground on the left side, a shop that sells various Japanese gift items and souvenirs, including umbrellas. One such umbrella, colored pink, is displayed in front of the shop. Some pedestrians are walking on the road, and in the background we can see the main gate of the temple.

Lunchtime Walk; Jan 20, 2025

Working from home today gave me the chance for a short walk. In early-spring-like weather, I had an iced coffee outside on a sun-flooded terrace! ☀️ Then a quick peek into Jōrakuin, a local temple.

Many people are familiar with the famous Daibutsu (Big Buddha) statues in Kamakura, Nara and Hyogo (Kobe). But did you know that there is also a “Tokyo Daibutsu”at Joren-ji Temple in Itabashi Ward? At 13 meters tall, it is actually the third-largest in Japan behind Nara and Kamakura. While the Buddha statue is relatively new (1977), the temple dates back around 500 years.

There is a temple called Nanzo-in (南蔵院) in my immediate neighborhood here in Tokyo - but there is a far more famous temple of the same name in Sasaguri, Fukuoka. It is notable for its reclining Buddha statue, said to be the world's largest bronze statue at 41 meters long and 11 meters high. More than 1 million people visit every year.
