Architecture serves as a mirror reflecting the culture and history of civilizations. When discussing Japanese and Chinese architecture, we find that both have deep roots in Asian traditions, yet each possesses unique characteristics that set it apart.

Floating Torii Gate
Epcot Center.
Disney World. Florida, USA

A color photograph, with a Japanese-style ‘gate’. The gate is centered in the photograph, with Disney World’s Epcot Center centered in the negative space beneath the gate. The water in between Epcot and the Gate reflect the warm colors blending with the cool blues of the sky. The gate is made of wood painted red. Very dry to the touch. The gate slowly goes into the water from the shore. The shore is made up of palm-sized smooth rocks. Since it is Epcot Center, you could hear Japanese music playing in the background to help sell the illusion of being in a tiny slice of Japan. Even though this is all inside a crowded, busy theme park, staring at the gate does provide a few minutes of tranquility. Having noise-cancelling headphones helped.

Good morning from Tokyo!

"The Reader" is a photo I took at Kenninji. The oldest Zen temple in Kyoto has beautiful halls, gardens, paintings of dragons, and a gilded folding screen adorned with a famous image of the wind and thunder gods.

At one of the main halls of Kenninji Temple in Kyoto, Japan, an elderly man wearing a hat is seated on a bench and reading a book. He is seen from a position inside the tatami-floored hall, between Japanese-style sliding doors that are partially open, and allow a view towards a green Japanese garden. We can also see some of the hall's historic interior wooden architecture details.
