“In #Kamala #Harris we have a chance to elect a president who is for the middle class because she is from the middle class,” progressive Rep #Ocasio-#Cortez said in her speech on Monday.

“She understands the urgency of rent checks and groceries and prescriptions. She is as committed to our reproductive and civil rights as she is to taking on corporate greed.”

Ocasio-Cortez issued a wholehearted endorsement of the new nominee, and she promised that, if elected, Harris would serve as a champion of the middle class.

In his own convention speech, Senator #Bernie #Sanders pledged that Democrats would use their governing power to “tax the rich”, “take on price gouging” and “expand Medicare”.

The possibility of that change has animated progressives.
“The energy is electrifying and it’s a lot of young folks,” the congresswoman #Pramila #Jayapal, chair of the Congressional #Progressive #caucus, told the Guardian.
“If you have young people, if you have progressives, Black, brown, Indigenous folks, working-class folks, that is actually the base that helps us to win because they are the ones that go door to door. They’re the ones that mobilize voters.”

To deliver on the promises that progressives are seeking, Harris may have to distance herself from Biden in certain areas, especially climate and the war on Gaza.
During his 2020 campaign, Biden embraced a sweeping climate agenda as he looked to reassure the millions of progressive voters who had not backed him in the primary.
While Biden signed the most significant federal climate bill in history, the Inflation Reduction Act, however, failed to follow through on his campaign pledge of “no more drilling on federal lands”.

Progressives hope Harris will stick to some of the promises that Biden made as a candidate but then walked back.

“We cannot have that happen again,” #Jeff #Merkley, a senator, told the Guardian.
“We, as climate truth-tellers, have to be very present, very loud, very determined to say,❇️ ‘We will back you 1,000%, but you can’t keep expanding the fossil infrastructure.’”❇️

House Speaker Emerita Nancy #Pelosi (D-Calif.) praised Vice President Kamala #Harris' selection of Minnesota Gov. Tim #Walz as her running mate, calling him a "heartland of America Democrat."
Why it matters:

Pelosi, who remains one of the most important power-brokers in the Democratic Party, challenged Republican claims that Walz represents "the left" and is more radical than the other VP finalists.

"Tim Walz I know very well. He served in the House.
To characterize him as 'left' is so unreal," Pelosi said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

"Really, it's mystifying to me to see someone that I worked with

Between the lines:
As a member of Congress from 2007 to 2019, Walz's voting record was more conservative than at least 70% of House Democrats, according to Voteview data.

Walz does have a more progressive record as governor,
signing laws protecting abortion rights, legalizing marijuana, restricting gun access and providing universal school meals for students.

During the veepstakes, he had the support of key progressive leaders like Sen. Bernie #Sanders (I-Vt.) and House Progressive Caucus Chair Pramila #Jayapal (D-Wash.).

Her campaign has run TV ads calling her “the one true progressive in the race.”

#Dexter has run on her record on abortion, renewable energy and housing in the state legislature.
The race has drawn a flood of outside money.

A mysterious super PAC called Voters for Responsive Government spent $3.2 million on TV ads 💥attacking Jayapal.

💥It won’t be required to disclose its donors until after the primary.


And 314 Action Fund, a hybrid PAC that supports Democrats with science and engineering backgrounds, has spent $2.2 million in the race backing Dexter.

A campaign finance filing last night revealed who gave to 314 Action last month and helped to underwrite the ads.

Top donors included former New York mayor Mike Bloomberg, who gave $500,000, and the investor Robert Granieri, who gave $350,000.

“What The Intercept can reveal is that Susheela Jayapal is being targeted by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC, which is secretly funneling money into the race by washing it through 314 Action, according to two Democratic members of Congress familiar with the arrangement.”
