A black and white photograph shows the ruins of a large stone abbey. The view is from inside, looking down a central aisle towards a distant archway. On either side, rows of broken pillars and arches define the former nave. The sun casts long shadows across the stone floor and gravel. The architecture is Gothic, with tall, pointed arches. The image conveys a sense of history and decay.A vibrant color photograph features a partial view of an old stone structure, likely a ruin, on the left side. The weathered, reddish-brown stone column and wall fill the left foreground. Against a clear, deep blue sky on the right, a Scottish flag (the Saltire) flies from a flagpole. The flag is white on blue and appears to be blowing gently in the wind. The contrast between the ancient stone and the bright national flag is prominent.

Back in time to June 2019.....

Mary, Queen of Scots’ House in Jedburgh is a fascinating museum dedicated to the life and legacy of Mary, Queen of Scots. It is located in the Scottish Borders town of Jedburgh and is one of the most iconic sites associated with her life. Mary, Queen of Scots, stayed in the house in October 1566 after visiting the Earl of Bothwell, who had been injured while defending Hermitage Castle.

The journey to Hermitage and back was arduous, covering over 40 miles on horseback in a single day. Shortly after her return to Jedburgh, she became gravely ill, possibly with a fever or pneumonia. Her recovery was slow, and this episode marked a significant turning point in her reign.

This photograph shows a picturesque 16th-century stone tower house, characteristic of the Scottish Borders. It has a charming, rustic appearance with its textured stonework, steep slate roofs, and a small circular turret with conical roofing, giving it a castle-like feel. The building is surrounded by a tidy garden area, featuring a neatly trimmed tree to the left and a red-leafed tree to the right.

A wooden bench sits in the foreground, where a person is seated, adding a serene, human touch to the scene. The building’s windows and doors are modest, in keeping with the architectural style of the period. This is Mary, Queen of Scots’ House in Jedburgh, which is a museum today. The overall ambiance is tranquil and historical, inviting visitors to explore its rich past.
