*Hemitomes congestum* (https://w.wiki/UH7) lacks chlorophyll because it gets its nutrients by parasitizing fungi. Very cool find on a summer's evening.

On the way home we stopped at Jeans Beans in #Watertown #JeffersonCounty #NewYork and I bought some baked beans and some tuna mac salad. It's a prepared food takeout place that's "bean" in business since 1953.

Postcard from Port Townsend, Washington, visited yesterday. Two to three times a year, Lemoine Studios comes out here from Seattle to spend a few hours. Never get tired of it, always love the place, which I first found in 1987 or so. I still get all emotional when the hill with the courthouse comes into view as I drive toward PT. Saw far more deer than other times and still wonder why it's so rare to encounter a male.

A look at the Salish inland sea from Port Townsend. It's a stormy, chilly fall day with amazing clouds and dramatic light.

On a hill above downtown, the Jefferson County courthouse in Port Townsend is a sort of exuberant British-style brick building that always reminds me a little of St. Pancras station in London.

Two deer rest on a lawn in front of a house in the uptown neighborhood of Port Townsend. Yesterday, we saw dozens of the animals, many more than a few months ago. Some owners fence their yards or parts of them, but many don't, and the animals cruise around fearlessly, munching grass and shrubs and maybe some other things.

Port Townsend is a bit reminiscent of a tiny British town around 1892, but also has a strong native heritage and tries to keep the culture alive through art, walking paths, naming, and other reminders. This welcome pole by the Northwest Maritime Center was a gift from the Jamestown S'klallam Tribe.

Flat Fire Update – August 24, 2025 (Noon)

Deschutes County Sheriff Ty Rupert and Lt. Nathan Garibay, with our Emergency Management Unit, joined state, regional, and local partners for the Flat Fire briefing at the Sisters Rodeo grounds this morning.

Nearly 4,000 homes remain in evacuation zones, and approximately 1,000 are in Level 3 (Go Now).

No changes to Deschutes County evacuation levels as of noon today. The information we shared last night remains valid.

Fire managers report that many homes have been saved, thanks to the incredible work of fire crews and the preparedness of homeowners who created defensible space.

We are working today to confirm the status of homes and structures impacted by the fire. Updates will be shared as soon as they are available.

The Flat Fire Assistance Line is (541) 550-4888, staffed from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. If you call outside those hours, you can leave a voicemail, and someone will return your call as soon as possible.

Red Cross has set up a Shelter at Highland Baptist Church, 3100 SW Highland Ave, Redmond, OR. It operates 24 hours a day and provides a safe place for overnight stays, drop-ins, and access to food and other resources.

Level 1, 2 and 3 evacuations remain in effect under the direction of the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office - See their Facebook pages for the latest information and updates.

A 24-hour evacuation point has been setup at Highland Baptist Church located at: 3100 SW Highland Ave, Redmond, OR. Jefferson County Fairgrounds is available for large animals.
