After encouragement from upstairs, I tried the #AI assistant in #JetBrains Rider for a few tasks.
First was debugging. After isolating the general area and conditions so I could give it a specific "why is it doing X instead of Y in ZFactory?” It found what could have been the problem, but wasn’t even close.
Next was to write some unit tests. It… made a good start.
Then to writing code. Nope. Bad fail.
But explaining complex code, yeah, it was good at that.
Use with critique and advisement.
The #ai agent #Junie by #jetbrains is pretty impressive! I'd blow through the monthly credits in 3 working days 😂

Trying #SwiftOnServer now. It is insanely good. I do pretty simple things, but I love it. gRPC/OpenAPI/PostgreSQL/NIO support — easy.
The only thing that slows me considerably is Xcode. VSCode is not that better unfortunately. I miss JetBrains tools sooooo much. Please, #JetBrains, allow me to work with plain Swift Packages on Mac. https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/KMT-1980/Cant-run-Swift-Package-on-macOS-My-Mac-target
And compilation time. I have 5 services, each is tiny, but depends on grpc/protobuf/etc. Each compiles 1.5 mins. How to make it quick?

I’m rather smitten with the *idea* of dev containers and, to a degree, the reality delivers. Reproducible environments. Familiar primitives. Editors with decent adoption offer a good experience. Most engineers understand containers well enough to tolerate the rough edges.
But I can’t shake the feeling there are better ways to reach the same goal.
The usual answer is “Nix”, and that’s probably right. Yet the rise of Dev Containers feels less like a breakthrough and more like a side-effect of the container monoculture. They work because containers are everywhere, not because they’re especially well-suited to dev environments. If there’s a real successor, it likely abstracts Nix *away*, integrates cleanly with editors, and doesn’t require heavyweight plugins or full VM-scale artefacts to edit a file.
What’s wrong with dev containers? They’re slow, expensive, and bloated relative to the problem they’re solving. I’m still invested, and I’ll keep using them. But it does feel like, as an industry, we’ve settled for the first thing that worked rather than the best thing we could build.

Das alles möglichst in nur einer Software und auswählbar.

Nun werde ich mal schauen, was die neue Version von #PHPStorm by #JetBrains alles kann.
Wenn ich irgendwann mal für kleines Geld - derzeit hab ich nicht so viel zum Investieren - mein altes #Goland , das ich von einem ehemaligen Arbeitgeber mit Fallback-Lizenz, bekommen habe, upgraden kann, werde ich zuschlagen.
Schade, das JetBrains da nicht wirklich etwas für Solo-Selbstständige mit kleiner Programmierschmiede haben.
Ideal fände ich ein Paket, dass man selbst zusammenstellt.

Hab ganz verpasst, dass das IntelliJ Plugin seit 8.12. endlich auf für Windows verfügbar ist. Vorher war es auschließlich iOS.
