Klar lässt sich dieser Film sehr eng mit dem Thema verknüpfen, welchen Wert wir als (patriarchal geprägte) Gesellschaft einer alternden Frau zumessen. Klar sollten wir uns hier die drängende Frage stellen, warum wir Menschen abhängig von ihrem Alter überhaupt einen Wert zumessen. Aber das ist hier nur ein Teilaspekt dessen, was mich so gepackt hat.

Mir ging Gina Rowlands’ Figur extrem nahe. Sie ist eine Frau, getrieben von der Angst, dass sich unter dem Ruhm einfach nichts ist. Sie trinkt nicht, weil sie ihre inneren Dämonen mit Alkohol betäuben will; sie trinkt, weil es sie davon abhält, in sich hineinzublicken. Denn dort lauert womöglich nichts – keine Ziele, keine Werte, nichts Liebenswertes, nicht einmal Dämonen, sondern nur die große Leere.

Wahrscheinlich nimmt sie der Tod einer jungen Frau, von der sie verehrt wurde, so heftig mit. Denn die verkörperte den Fan im wortwörtlichen Sinne: fanatisch, obsessiv, blinden Applaus und scheinbar bedingungslose „Liebe“ spendend. Gina Rowlands’ Figur bekommt es nun mit der nackten Panik zu tun. Denn was ist, wenn dieser tosende Applaus plötzlich abebbt und gänzlich versiegt? Dann ist da nur noch die große Leere, die ohrenbetäubende Stille. Und das ist das, was mir durch Mark und Bein ging.

The Crowd Roars (1932), a Howard Hawks race-car melodrama. Also deals with the uneasy dynamics that develop when a woman enters this male world. Very Hawksian. Grown-up action movie with some depth. James Cagney and Joan Blondell are terrific.

It's a pre-code movie and Bebe Daniels and Joan Blondell are in it, but sadly MY PAST (1931) just doesn't quite make it. It does have some pre-code naughtiness but comes across as slightly unpleasant. I just didn't like these people.
