Fun fact: Back in about 2008 or so, when DHS wasn't widely known to be evil (I mean, some of us had strong suspicions), I was part of a multi-university coalition awarded a multimillion-dollar, multi-year grant to study border dynamics. My piece was a 3-year study of immigration, crime, social integration, and related variables.

A week after we were awarded the grant, it was rescinded. Someone in DC knew someone who leaned on the Homeland Security grants people and made them yank our grant and give it to a coalition headed by Texas A&M (who had not won the grant, initially). Even if I didn't know what I know now about DHS/ICE/CBP, that experience would make me avoid working with them.

"The problem is less that candidates are using A.I. — a skill many employers say they want — than it is that they’re being sloppy. Alexa Marciano, the managing director of Syndicatebleu, a recruiting agency, said job seekers were reacting to recruiters’ use of automated screening. “It’s really frustrating for the candidates because they spend all this time creating very catered cover letters, very catered résumés,” she said.
Jeremy Schifeling, a career coach who regularly conducts technology-focused job-search training at universities, said he could see this back-and-forth going on for a while. “As students get more desperate, they say, ‘Well, I have no choice but to up the ante with these paid tools to automate everything.’ And I’m sure the recruiters are going to raise the bar again.”
He argues the endgame will be authenticity from both sides. But, he said, “I do think that a lot of people are going to waste a lot of time, a lot of processing power, a lot of money until we reach that realization.”"

Applause, please, for the companies that have managed to make jobhunting even worse, thanks to AI. @404mediaco’s Samantha Cole reports on the experiences of a woman named Ken, who was interviewed by an AI avatar that said “vertical bar pilates” 14 times in a row. She related her experiences on TikTok and received more than 3,000 comments, many sharing similar stories. “A company tried to send me to an AI interview for an HR position… Why would I want to work HUMAN resources for a company that won’t even dignify me with human interaction???” one person wrote.

Foreign jobseekers ditch the UK market — with one surprising exception.

Foreign interest in the UK labour market declined in the first three months of 2025.

However, interest from US job seekers rose significantly during this period, coinciding with the beginning of Donald Trump's second presidency.
