I am 54 years old and have worked for some shit employers in my time. To give you some context to this statement: when my father passed away, I called in to inform them that I would be unable to honour my shift the next day. The colleague on the other end of the phone complained that I had not given them much notice. Being a huge fan of the works of ‘Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker’ I replied, “I would have called earlier, but my dad wasn’t dead then!” I was then criticised about my attitude by this dickhead, but to be fair, my line manager did call me back within five minutes to offer his condolences and ask how much time off I needed. Yesterday marks a first for me: at 22:25 on December 9th, I came a gnat’s chuff away from looking my line manager in the eye and screaming into his face that he could poke his job where the mice wouldn’t be able to get at it! It looks like 2026 will be the first year where the phrase ‘new year, new me’ could actually apply.

I'd have to be a lot closer to dead--or maybe my child would have to be in danger of starvation--for me to consider this.

Fun fact: Back in about 2008 or so, when DHS wasn't widely known to be evil (I mean, some of us had strong suspicions), I was part of a multi-university coalition awarded a multimillion-dollar, multi-year grant to study border dynamics. My piece was a 3-year study of immigration, crime, social integration, and related variables.

A week after we were awarded the grant, it was rescinded. Someone in DC knew someone who leaned on the Homeland Security grants people and made them yank our grant and give it to a coalition headed by Texas A&M (who had not won the grant, initially). Even if I didn't know what I know now about DHS/ICE/CBP, that experience would make me avoid working with them.

Alexa Marciano, the managing director of Syndicatebleu, a recruiting agency, said job seekers were reacting to recruiters’ use of automated screening. “It’s really frustrating for the candidates because they spend all this time creating very catered cover letters, very catered résumés,” she said.
Jeremy Schifeling, a career coach who regularly conducts technology-focused job-search training at universities, said he could see this back-and-forth going on for a while. “As students get more desperate, they say, ‘Well, I have no choice but to up the ante with these paid tools to automate everything.’ And I’m sure the recruiters are going to raise the bar again.”
He argues the endgame will be authenticity from both sides. But, he said, “I do think that a lot of people are going to waste a lot of time, a lot of processing power, a lot of money until we reach that realization.”"

She related her experiences on TikTok and received more than 3,000 comments, many sharing similar stories. “A company tried to send me to an AI interview for an HR position… Why would I want to work HUMAN resources for a company that won’t even dignify me with human interaction???” one person wrote.
