#JohnHoward

Two questions for those with some knowledge of Australian law:

Is it a crime under Australian law (whether federal or state) to incite the commission of #WarCrimes and/or #CrimesAgainstHumanity?

Would enthusiastic public advocacy for the Commonwealth government to (openly)* join the wildly illegal #WarOfAggression launched by #Israel + #US forces against #Iran (including celebrating the deliberate targeting of civilians)** be prima facie evidence of such a crime?

Since Australia has still not arrested #JohnHoward for his crimes in helping to launch an earlier disastrous war of aggression 22 years ago, I'm not holding my breath here, but I would like to know whether/which laws are being ignored when (for instance) a high-profile weapons lobbyist urges the federal government to commit illegal acts by joining this latest war of aggression (completely unauthorised by the UN Security Council).

*See: #PineGap.
**The 10+ scientists assassinated (often along with their families and neighbours) by Israel's initial strikes were civilians. Israel has openly admitted, even boasted, that these individuals (non-combatants under #InternationalLaw) were specifically targeted with overwhelmingly lethal force.

the slippery slope of policies deciding some lives are more important than others… which we are now seeing bear fruit in USA 🤔

on immigration <This remains part of the party's policy platform, which includes "deporting 75,000 illegal migrants" and "cutting immigration by over 570,000 people" from current levels by capping visas at 130,000 per year.

In 2001, then Liberal prime minister #JohnHoward demanded One Nation be placed last on the party's how-to-vote cards.

He later defended the WA Liberal's 2017 preference deal with One Nation, saying "everyone changes in 16 years".>

and
<<Now, it is disaffected Liberal voters generally, just as a lot of Greens voters are disaffected Labor voters, rather than voters who are desperately concerned about immigration.

"On paper, both major parties are addressing that anyway.">>

From preferences to polling: Could One Nation gain more power this election?

“If #PeterDutton (#Liberal) ☢️ were to form government, safety could come to the fore again because it would need to overturn the #FederalBan on #NuclearEnergy, implemented in 1999 by #JohnHoward (ex PM, Liberal) in a deal with #TheGreens.

Despite the dangers being dismissed by Labor☢️ (AUKUS) and the Coalition ☢️, Caldicott remains concerned about #NuclearWaste being improperly stored in #Australia and contaminating water supplies – or even a #Chernobyl-like #reactor meltdown.

The #LNP has a candidate problem cont

“On March 5, #Yung admitted to falsely claiming he had raised $60,000 during an intimate dinner with #JohnHoward ahead of the 2019 state election. He did not specify how much was actually raised. Then revelations came out that the then-#Kogarah candidate engaged a *digital strategy firm* to undertake work potentially worth tens of thousands of dollars.

One month later, a leaked video of a speech Yung gave during a Lunar New Year celebration discredited previous efforts to distance himself from #XieXiongming, a #casino high roller linked to the #ChineseCommunistParty.”

Mainstream media in Australia might finally be starting to wake-up and call-out Trump and his cronies.

Years ago, the Sun-Herald used to be Sydney's broadsheet newspaper, but it has long since lost its sense of balance and political teeth after being bought-out by a succession of increasingly right-wing media moguls. It's quite remarkable that they're printing a headline like this now.

The headline is a reference to a sledge aimed at cowardly, right-wing, yes-men for their support for the invasion of Iraq, "There they are a conga line of suckholes on the conservative side of politics." It was delivered by former ALP Leader of the Opposition and aspiring PM, Mark Latham (when he still sounded sane; long before he got RWNJ brainworms). I've always wondered about that particular line, and mused that his speechwriters were tapping into a vein of former Prime Minster, Paul Keating. He once said John Howard was "Like a shiver waiting for a spine to crawl up."

Amusingly, the subeditor misnamed Jeff Bezos as "Geoff Bezos" in the caption.

Photo of a newspaper article from the Sun Herald, Sunday 2 March 2025 (Sydney, Australia).
The headline: "Conga line of Trump's sycophants shows us what weakness looks like".
A photo in the centre of the article is a montage. In the middle, the face of Donald Trump is looking straight at the camera and scowling, and depicted in black-and-white tinted blue. In the bottom left corner, Jeff Bezos is looking at Trump in three-quarter profile, and depicted in black-and-white. In the bottom right corner, Elon Musk is looking at Trump in three-quarter profile, and depicted in black-and-white. He's wearing a cap with embroidered with a RWNJ political slogan, and has a goofy facial expression like a schoolboy who's trying to impress someone.

@tonycart
Yes the possibility is becoming apparent with Dutton having a major party sounding like the fringe nationalist One Nation party from decades ago.

And the arc from John Howard to Tony Abbott to Morrison to Dutton is looking more and more like a direction that will be continued.

The article' places the roots in "failures of neoliberalism and globalism".

I doubt this is an very helpful explanation.
