"My first encounter with Lilith came when I was about 8 or 9, in the mid-seventies. PBS was showing a series of films about the women's movement, most of which were too serious or sad for me to find interesting, until a very short animated film came on. The film was about Eve in the Garden of Eden, but unlike other versions of this familiar story, the focus was not on God or Adam.
The focus of the cartoon, which was not for children, was on a wistful, bored Eve, who encounters a mysterious presence in the Garden. A dark-haired woman, who lives along the periphery of the Garden walls- it is this presence that draws Eve away from her usual habits, and that prompts her to climb the Tree of Knowledge in order to leave the Garden, to join her brave and independent new companion, Lilith."

Next was "Essays in the Intellectual History of the Jews" by David Berger. I read this book because I wanted to learn more about the pre-1700s Jewish diaspora, and while there's some of that here (a great second chapter being the standout, as well as another interesting chapter on Sephardic and Ashkenazic messianism in the Middle Ages) much of the rest are deep cut analyses of Jewish religious thought.
