Continuing to share favourite images from my 30+ year photographic career. Now looking at outdoor activities, this is my partner on the Via Ferrata on the North Face of Mala Mojstrovka in the Julian Alps, Slovenia.

This analog composition by European photographers Mauro Battistelli and Nibera captures the Slovenian Julian Alps in surreal light. Bathed in golden hues, the vibrant mountains evoke a timeless, nostalgic sentiment, blending nature with artistic vision. #Nature #Photography #JulianAlps #AnalogArt

- the hut just underneath Triglav was the circus we dreaded and expected. Crowded, loud, bucketlist-people, Instagirls. We only stayed there, because we needed to replan because of the weather.
- in multiple huts, as well as in our hotel, pancakes were a normal thing (Slovenians, you rock!!). I love pancakes and boosted moral on the final bone-soaking day.
- we were glad to have our via ferrata set and helm with us, even when it was only for the Triglav. It was crowded (risk of rockfall) and windy at the ridge (especially with the backpack we could feel the gusts).
- the variety of "just" hiking and later on a via ferrata was a cool combination.
- the Julian Alps are large enough to make mutliple multi-day hikes without using a trail twice. I can see myself returning in the future.
Thank you Slovenia, we enjoyed you very much! 💚
2/2
Last week's trip was my first time in Slovenia (just traveling through 30 years ago does not count). Thought I list my observations of my days in the Julian Alps.
- the Julian Alps are truly beautiful, the lower parts are lush and green, the upper parts consists of white rock. The contrast of the two makes it special
- the valleys are not so wide and long, so the surroundings change quickly. It makes it all look cosy.
- the huts are mostly very basic, some of them have no running water at all. I found the food meagre (beans, yeast, soup, pasta without a lot of sauce). In contrast of the main dishes the breakfasts were above average (baked eggs is pretty standard, have not seen this before in huts). Also desserts (which also can be eaten as breakfast or lunch) are quite common.

dTdT-2024 day 5: Zasavska koca na Prehodavcih - Koca pri Triglavskih Jezerih - Stara Fužina
During the night the weather indeed deteriorated with thunderstorms and very heavy rain. Yesterday we already decided to break off the hike and luckily in the morning there was a short better weather window so we set off early.
At 10am however, it started raining again and this did not stop anymore until we reached the valley at 3pm. Soaked to the bone we were picked up for the final few kilometres. Shortly after, a hot shower was waiting.
dTdT-2024 day4: Dom Planika pod Triglavom - Triglav - Zasavska koca na Prehodavcih
A weather forecast remains just that: a forecast. Today this meant there was no visibility at all during the climb (and descent) of Triglav.
Still, it was a rewarding climb with some tricky parts, also because of the wind gusts at the final ridge.
In the afternoon we hiked to Zasavska hut, where we made plans for tomorrow, as the weather forecast was now orange with possible heavy snowfall (50cm at our altitude).
dTdT-2024 day 3: Koca na planini pri Jezeru - Vodnikov dom - Dom Planika pod Triglavom
As we stayed in the hut yesterday, we also needed to replan. Skipped a hut and summit which were a bit to the east of the rest of the route. We had a long day to the new hut, in order to use the weather window tomorrow for summiting Triglav in the early morning. It was a beautiful day today. We were glad to get out again.
dTdT-2024 day 2: Koca na planini pri Jezeru
We couldn't ask for much more, but weather was the one thing. We decided to spend the day in the hut, as the forecast was for heavy rain the whole day (which proved to be right).
dTdT-2024 day 1: Stara Fužina - Pršivec - Koca na planini pri Jezeru
After much preparation and anticipation we finally we were able to start our bi-yearly hike with friends. As one friend is afraid of heights, I planned a separate very easy route to the hut where we gathered again. The rest of us climbed over the ridge to Pršivec and descended from there to the hut. Good weather and nice company. Can't ask for much more.
Arrived at my final destination. Will go cool off in the lake and get some breakfast for tomorrow. The mountains are showing themselves in full glory. Enjoying it, as the weather will change from tomorrow afternoon onwards.
@bergmeister Hope you have a lovely time, it was a great trip and I was very lucky with the weather.
Just booked the Nightjet for my trip to the Julian Alps, Slovenia in September. From Zurich without transfer to Slovenia.🙌
First time in a night train since traveling with Interrail in the beginning of the 90's.
