Spiritsville is the second album led by American jazz trombonist Julian Priester which was recorded in 1960 for Riverside's subsidiary Jazzland label.

François van de Linde of Flophouse Magazine stated that Spiritsville has "no lack" of swing, and called it "a fine album that boasts the challenging tune 'Excursion' and a great ballad reading by Priester of 'It Might As Well Be Spring'." - Wikipedia

Herbie Hancock, Sextant, 1973 on Columbia

1973’s Sextant was the last LP with the so-called Mwandishi-era sextet: Bennie Maupin, Eddie Henderson, Julian Priester, Buster Williams, and Billy Hart. It was also his debut on Columbia after Blue Note and Warner Bros. Columbia would also release Head Hunters later the same year.

Great, funky collection – side 2 is one track, the 19:35 “Hornets.” Hancock plays Fender Rhodes, Mellotron, and ARP and Moog synthesizers and there’s lots of complex percussion and instrumentation.

My copy is the Dec 2023 Vinyl Me Please Essentials (VMP E132) reissue, marketed as the 50th Anniversary Edition, on “Lunar Marble” vinyl with listening notes by Marcus J. Moore (who wrote High and Rising, the first biography of De La Soul).

Jazztodon artist of the week: Julian Priester! Trombonist Priester was a member of Sun Ra's big band, recording several albums with the group, before leaving Chicago in 1956 to tour with Lionel Hampton, and he then joined Dinah Washington in 1958. The following year he settled in New York and joined the group led by drummer Max Roach, who heard him playing on the Philly Joe Jones album, "Blues for Dracula" (1958). While playing in Roach's group, Priester also recorded two albums as a leader, "Keep Swingin’" and
Spiritsville.” In 1969, he accepted an offer to play with Duke Ellington's big band, and he stayed with that ensemble for six months, before leaving in 1970 to join pianist Herbie Hancock's fusion sextet. In the 1980s, he became a member of the Dave Holland's quintet, and also returned to Sun Ra's band for a few recordings. Priester continues to record albums under his own name.

“My first experience with electronics was way back before it became popular: , back in the mid 1950s. He was the first person in my experience to use electronics. He used an electronic piano. He brought in a bass player that was playing a bass guitar with amplification” — Julian Priester on his hypnotic ‘Love, Love’ LP, recorded over two sessions in 1973 (via The Stranger, 2015) thestranger.com/music/2015/01/

Clifford Jordan - "In The World" (1972)

This is the Japanese P-Vine 45rpm 2xlp reissue of Clifford Jordan's classic, originally issued as part of Strata East's Dolphy series. What an incredible lineup of musicians.

#AndrewHill (piano). #KennyWheeler may have been influenced by AH’s ensemble work (eg. moving away from the staid quartet/quintet format). And there is certainly continuity of musicians, eg. #JulianPriester #trombone #jazz #lines
