A photograph of a piece of junkmail that was sent to me by Discover card. The piece of mail is a black envelope with a fancy tab and some gold lettering. It feels filled with thick paper that literally nobody will ever open and read because nobody wants whatever it is they're selling...which does make me wonder how much trash they are creating for advertising that goes largely unacknowledged.

I don't get much #JunkMail anymore but I just hate when I get one of those insurance junk mailers that put your name on virtually every page of the stuff because I shred anything with my name & address on it before dumping it in the trash & it's a PITA to try to find every mention of my name & address on such trash. 🤦‍♂️

#Spam is far preferable to junk mail because my spam folders catches most of it & I can just delete it all with a click of a mouse.

Don't know why vendors & insurance companies are still sending out junk mail anymore anyway . . . spam is much cheaper (zero cost for sending) & isn't any more likely to get results that they pay for sending out junk mailers via USPS. 🤷‍♂️

The first email was sent (July 3rd, 2025) by someone called "Coconut." The person who replied was "Hazel Koehler," followed by someone known as "OldCoder," and then "Jacob Hall."

The nonsense continues between "OldCoder" and "Hazel Koehler." Eventually, "Insert5StarName" joins in and seems just as put off by all of this as I am, leading them to ask not to be included.

Despite that, the back-and-forth between "OldCoder" and "Hazel Koehler" continues (July 7th, 2025).

Also, this one will opt out of catalogs that come in the mail, but you have to enter the information for catalogs you receive. It won’t stop them from coming unless they already come.

I didn’t dig deep into this, I didn’t like the idea of giving all that information to another website, but it looks like it’s run by the “the story of stuff” project & they used to be legit, so they’re probably not trying to get our info to sell it later. But I haven’t looked at what they’ve been up to in more than a decade so don’t just trust me on this.

Called back again in the morning, first person I reached put me on hold for many minutes, then I got transferred to a second person who claimed to have made the necessary change so I would stop receiving junk-mail; we'll see if it works.
The whole call took 17 minutes. If they had a f*cking unsubscribe form on their web site I could have accomplished this in less than a minute.

Just tried to get #CitizensBank to stop sending me junk (paper, not e-) mail. Called the number for this listed in their privacy policy. Kept being asked by the automated system to enter my account number. I don't have one, I'm a _former_ customer. No instructions given for what to do if you don't have an account number. I just kept hitting 0 until it stopped asking, at which point it informed me they couldn't handle my call right now and I had to call back in the morning.

I use old envelopes to write shopping lists and other notes on. But my supply has been dwindling because I don’t get many letters any more.

I regularly donate to a few select charities and causes. As a result, I'm inundated with junk mail requests for donations. Most of these go directly into my shredder since I don't respond to mail requests. The few causes that I support are ones I either sought out or stumbled across. Interestingly, some donation requests come with money, so now they're sending me money. I have a dollar bill and a small collection of nickels that certain organizations have sent me. Perhaps they do this so I have to open the envelope and remove the nickels before shredding it. I really, really hate junk mail.
