It would be nice if Nvidia could fix the "*ERROR* [nvidia-drm] [GPU ID 0x00000b00] Attempt to wait on invalid sync FD: -24" bug that freezes the Plasma panel.

@transcendentempress@eldritch.cafe you will get many answers i expect, prolly severely contradictory, but here's an option many prolly won't offer. if you'd like to get a well-setup โ:archlinux:โ that uses only the standard Arch repos, so you can trust there's no funny business going on, & you'd like the convenience of a graphical installer [#Calamares], check out #ezarcher by @eznix

KDE Slimbook VII marks eight years of progress for Linux laptops

Just realized that, according to this thread, Diamond version 2.0.3 was the last version of the Plasma 4 Diamond theme, and that version is what I have archived. If you click the link to go to the KDE Store, it returns a 404.

in my #blahajzone #sharkey instance's #antenna i follow numerous hashtags, including lotsa FOSS & โ:linux:โ ones... one of which being #Arch... intending it to be for ArchLinux [which i also follow]. an unexpected side-effect is that this also captures other types of arches, non-penguin ones, like this, with often stunning photos. so... #serendipity! ๐

Linux has a DHH problem.
If there's one thing I wish #KDE Plasma could do, it support the Ctrl-Shift-U combination for #Unicode characters. AFAIK, #MATEDesktop does support this, and I do believe it's supported elsewhere (just tested it in fvwm in Xephyr and it works there too). It's the only gripe I have with #KDEPlasma at the moment. :flan_disappointed:โ
@kalpa@fosstodon.org Hi again, i've now setup my VMs in my fresh #Kinoite system, so here's some pics from my #Kalpa VM within it, to show you what i mean.
As for your user script, i now begin to suspect this might be closer to the heart of the problem. in many many of the Kalpa installs i have done, that script never completes... the dialogue box sits on the desktop saying "waiting for internet", despite it being connected already. if that is supposed to be creating the User state for flatpaks, but never completes, then i suppose the consequence is... exactly what i have been experiencing.
i'm in australia. is it possible that there are no local mirrors, & so the distant ones are high latency, causing this behaviour? whatever the reason, i assure you this has been a significant problem for me for a long time, across many kalpa installs.

Just got a desktop notification thanks to #KDEConnect that my Samsung S25's battery is low.
I love #KDEPlasma, been a long time fan... but this is yet another example of just how awesome #KDE Connect is.
I have to leave in a bit and need my phone charged, if i hadn't gotten that notification it would've been a bad situation as i navigate metro and need my phone to get to an upcoming appointment.
KDE Plasma 6.5.3 Improves Visual Smoothness on Multi-Monitor VRR Setups
@enbykibby thx! by the time i went to bed in the wee small hours, it was still timing out & i was still pissed off. this morning, there was finally progress... my umpteenth attempt was still hideously slow, but somehow managed to avoid the timeouts, so i was able at last to complete the transaction, reboot, & finally it is now all behaving sweetly. far freaking out ๐ฎ๐คฏ
don't get why people like immutable distrosi was thoroughly disinterested in them for ages, but ~12-18 months ago began to get curious, so began playing with some in VMs. in parallel, as i have grown older, fatter, & even more lazy than ever ๐ฎ, my interest in maintaining my Arch primary boot has been waning... it remains splendid, not letting me down, tis just that my laziness is taking over. so slowly slowly slowly over recent months, the idea of trying an immutable on-SSD as a real daily system, not just a VM toy, began to grow on me. aaaaand, here we are! ๐
@kalpa@fosstodon.org @a_blahaj well, ofc, i certainly haven't a clue how & why, but it has routinely happened to me [since april 2024] with all but one of the installations i've done [only VMs, no actual HW... i had intended a month or two ago to install it on my Lappy, but couldn't, then you explained to me it does not support bios & msdos, only uefi & gpt]. the last time i discussed this with you, you told me much the same thing, which ofc only blows my mind further given i dunno why i keep finding impossible things ๐คฏ
atm i am still in the throes of setting up my tower's new Kinoite, installed last night to replace the lovely-but-flawed KDELinux. i do not yet have its QEMU KVM working properly, so can't atm launch my recent Kalpa VM to screenshot the root request for you.

@a_blahaj ooooh, tricky question, one i have asked myself a lot over the months.
i am expert at neither, but prolly now have slightly more experience running Kinoite, given i put it on Lappy's SSD some/several months ago [posting from it atm, actually].
#Kinoite
- wins wrt me having solved basically all my needs on it now... #QEMU โ
, #Distrobox [incl Arch, damnit, sigh] โ
, #BackInTime โ
, #RustDesk โ
, #Flatpak with User not Root authority โ
, App Layering โ
, etc.
- loses in that i can only get its boot menu to offer me two versions, despite me seeing three each time i do rpm-ostree status -v.
#Kalpa
- wins in that its boot menu offers me several versions, which by definition provides more robust rollback capability IMO; Dev explained to me that layering is not a thing in Kalpa coz ... see his quote below
- loses in that almost every time i have installed it, when i enable Flathub it mandates root permission, ie, i have to install & update all subsequent Flatpaks after giving root permission [iirc one installation correctly made it User not Root, but all the rest "went wrong"].
there is no "layering" on kalpa, but you can absolutely attempt to install your vpn software via 'sudo transactional-update pkg in packagename' if it's in the repos, or 'sudo transactional-update run zypper in whatever.rpm' if you're downloading an rpm from a vendor.Fwiw, back to my KDELinux whinge:
Kalpa isn't image based like KDELinux or Kinoite, you'll be literally installing the rpm into the "immutable root" of the system
Oh no no noooooo, now i am pretty damn upset. It works fine in latest โ:firefox_nightly:โ and โ:floorp:โ in โ:debian:โ #SparkyLinux and โ:fedora:โ #Kinoite, but back in my preferred โ:kde:โ โ:linux:โ #KDELinux, wherein i first posted of the breakage, videos still do not play [anymore... they used to, til two days ago] in my โ:firefox_nightly:โ and โ:floorp:โ ... yet continue fine in โ:firefox:โ #Firefox therein. ๐ฎ๐คฏ๐ค๐คท
i have officially reached the stage of wondering just how many more papercuts i can tolerate with this otherwise fabulous alpha OS, before cutting my losses & replacing it with Kinoite [which runs well on my Lappy, & is free of almost all the papercuts i have battled here in my Tower's 3rd-boot KDELinux]. Sigh.
