The world’s only alpine parrot – the curious, clever, and often mischievous kea 🦜

Photographed here in its natural habitat in Otira, New Zealand, with the snow-covered Southern Alps as a backdrop. These endangered birds are full of personality and play a vital role in our mountain ecosystems.
Let’s protect what’s left.

A kea, New Zealand’s native alpine parrot, stands in the foreground on a ledge. Its feathers are olive green with hints of orange and teal, and it’s facing sideways against a dramatic backdrop of snow-covered mountains and rocky alpine terrain near Otira.

The flying Clown of the Mountains

Keas (Nestor notabilis) are the famous mountain parrots of Aotearoa New Zealand. Ther are considered intelligent and playful and deserve their nickname as “Clowns of the mountains”.

These parrots have the size of and acts like a one-year-old child, and with approximately the same level of cautious handling of things in its environment. Add wings and ability to fly, and the result can be troublesome, or flat out chaotic.

It has a big beak, large claws and the intelligence level capable of ripping off windscreen wipers, wheel protectors, and decorative strips from cars. Or play and destroy with anything else they can get their beak and claws on.

Sometimes they do it to the cars of the people who for some reason decide to feed them. And sometimes those Keas most accustomed to humans might do damage to parked cars without any people in proximity. Out of boredom, or spite. Like them being annoyed for not getting more food.

Very useful, this bird yells its name to us. The sound it makes as it flies is a high pitched Keeeeeeaa, which sounds very much like a bird of prey in the mountains in the Nordics.

This intelligent mountain parrot is only found in Aotearoa New Zealand.

@beyondwatts Adding #kea to my github.com/gitbls/ndm DNS/DHCP tool has been on my list for a while. Maybe it's time to get off my arse and git 'er done.

The homelab has been stable for a while now so it’s time to mix things up. Moving DHCP and DNS from the Synology NAS onto a primary/secondary set up in a pair of #raspberrypi that I had left over from the old cluster.

Today DHCP is moving to #Kea and once the dynamic DNS entries have been created, I’ll switch the DNS server over to #PowerDNS.

What could possibly go wrong?

We’re lucky to share our mountains with the world’s only alpine parrot — the clever and cheeky kea. Endemic to New Zealand, they’re full of personality… and mischief! If you’ve ever met one, you’ll know just how naughty they can be! They are extremely intelligent but will steal anything they are able to grab, as well as pulling trim off vehicles.

A kea, New Zealand’s alpine parrot, perched on a mossy rock in Arthur's Pass. Its olive-green feathers with bright orange underwings and blue flight feathers contrast against the rugged mountain backdrop, with snow-capped peaks and dense forested slopes under a cloudy sky.

@Kay @va2lam Have you seen this kea meme? I don't know who made it but it's brilliant.

An IKEA-styled multi-step instruction guide for "Car Disassembly" except that instead of IKEA, it's just KEA, and an kea bird (NZ alpine parrot) shows how to remove parts of a car with just its beak.

🌏 Kea (Nestor notabilis)

The kea is a highly intelligent and endangered species of parrot native to New Zealand. Known for its vibrant plumage, it is a large, olive-green bird with a brilliant orange under its wings. It has a long and narrow, curved, grey-brown beak. Renowned for its playful and inquisitive nature, it is often observed engaging in complex problem-solving behaviors. Keas are primarily found in mountain regions, where they feed on a variety of plant matter, insects, and carrion. Despite their remarkable adaptability and intelligence, keas face threats from habitat loss, introduced predators, and human activities.

Conservation status: Endangered (IUCN 3.1)
