I promise this is my last black kite (黑鳶 / Milvus migrans) for today - a great sharp shot of a bird in flight above Keelung Harbour in Northern Taiwan.

There was a couple photographing the kites at the same time as me, and they told me a remote location on the Xindian River where apparently you can get close to ospreys fishing off the river.

…recognise and start to predict. It turned into either:

- that bird just took a squid off the water, let’s stick with it and see if the others attack it, or

- that bird is being aggressive, I bet it’s about to fight someone, let’s stick with it and see who it attacks.

So - miracles of nature fit into a broader pattern, and the magic is in working out the pattern.

Not as sharp as I’d like, but you’re going to forgive me, given the timing and the detail on the water-droplets - a black kite / 黑鳶（Milvus migrans), hunting squid off Keelung Harbour in Northern Taiwan.

The cleanliness and health of Keelung Harbour today is so starkly different from the cesspool that greeted me when I first went there in 1990. Taiwan has done so much to clean up its environment.

#Typhoon #Danas, which 2 days ago was forecast to skirt past us along the Taiwan Strait, actually just made landfall in #Chiayi County.

Much of #Taiwan is closed for business and school on Monday, except for #Taipei, #NewTaipei, #Keelung, and #Taoyuan which will remain open. It's gonna be a "great" morning commuting in the rain for those living up north. 🤷‍♂️

A glorious morning being fried to a crisp by the baking summer sun and photographing black kites hunting over Keelung Harbour.

When I first came here in 1990, I watched mice scampering over the floating rubbish in the harbour, including an entire dead pig, and there wasn't a single raptor to be seen.

Today, I saw schools of fish that must have been 30+cm long, and watched dozens of kites circling, hunting and bickering.

Finally found some time to read and finish this book. It’s an ethnography of port workers at the postwar Keelung, Taiwan, depicting how the city’s rise and fall as a global supply chain hub, advent of neoliberalism and its cold rationalism/efficiencysm, as well as gentrification, have been affecting the lives of individuals who chose to/have no choice but to live in this place. A great, engaging read, despite the heaviness of the topic.

For #SchiffsSamstag a shot of a carrier vessel that had seen better days on a drizzly morning approach to Keelung, Taiwan in 2008. I'd woken early and headed to the front of the promenade deck to take pictures of our arrival.

It's a murky scene on an overcast day with dull light. We're on the water in a bay approaching a city that lines it, consisting of tightly-packed apartment blocks of various designs, and all with the look of having been there for a few decades, exposed to the elements. A few tree-filled hills rise in the background but they're partly lost to a hazy mist. You can feel a light drizzle in the air even if you can't see it. The water of the bay is flat and grey too, reflecting nothing. Between our position and the shoreline of buildings there is a ship in the water. It's a small cargo carrier and looks to be abandoned, sitting low in the water. Its hull was a bright green once but it's covered in dark, rusty patches. A crane lies along its length but it too looks too rusted to trust to ever lift anything on or off the ship's deck.
