If you're out in the middle of the Mojave, you may not want to be camping (or driving through) in a dry riverbed about now.

Report from rural Sprouston in Roxburghshire in 1855, just outside Kelso in the Scottish Borders. Accordionist Herr Yung is currently staying in Kelso, and entertaining communities with performances around and about the area, as well as tuning and repairing accordions. #Music #Scotland #ScottishBorders #Germany #accordion #squeezebox #History #Kelso

Extract from a newspaper page: "SPROUSTON - Herr J.G. Yung, the celebrated accordionist, a native of Germany, gave one of his brilliant and fascinating musical entertainments in the Schoolroom here on Thursday evening, the 15th instant. The audience on the occasion was very respectable, and the performer, who possesses an unassuming, gentlemanly demeanour, played a great number of German pieces with exquisite taste and skill. He executed also several of Scotia's finest airs in a style and with a delicacy and pathos which at once captivated and astonished his audience. The powers of the accordion were to us entirely unknown until we heard it touched by the skilful hands of Herr Yung."

A 1928 Bentley 4.5, taking part in the 'Flying Scotsman Rally 2015', passes Windywalls Farm, near Kelso, Scottish Borders, en route from Newcastle to Edinburgh. (2015.04.18).
#Bentley #Kelso #ScottishBorders #MotorRally #Windywalls #VintageCar
A medium telephoto shot of a 'vintage' open-top car, a 1928 4.5 litre Bentley, driving down a single-track country road at a moderate speed. It is viewed mainly front-on, but the nearside is visible; it is painted black, with some chrome parts. It has two occupants, wearing thick clothing and lined leather hats. The left side of the bonnet has the number 115 painted on it in white, and the radiator grill displays a large silver number 8; the car's registration number is YV 8828, above which is a plaque indicating it is taking part in the 'Flying Scotsman 2015' rally, a 'Vintage Reliability Trial'. The front of the car sports two large main headlamps, and two smaller spotlights. On the other side of the road is a grass verge, a wooden post-and-wire fence, and a narrow stand of leafless trees, through a gap in which part of a farm building can be seen. It's a bright sunny day. the shadow of the car falls to its right.

Bootprints in the Snow, near Windywalls, Kelso, Scottish Borders. (2010.01.08)
#Snow #Kelso #ScottishBorders #Trees #Winter
A wide angle shot mid-afternoon up a field towards a small rectangular plantation of trees, one of its corners nearest the camera. The field is covered with snow that fell overnight on a southeasterly wind; the snow has a rough surface texture, as it has not yet been subject to a freeze/thaw cycle. The trees facing southeast are plastered with snow; those behind, less so. From the viewpoint, a line of deep bootprints heads up towards the corner of the plantation; the snow is otherwise undisturbed. It is a sunny day, with a clear blue sky, visible behind the plantation.

The ruins of Kelso Abbey, once the grandest of the great abbeys of the Scottish Borders. The repeated attentions of Henry VIII's army during the "rough wooing" of the 1540s ensured that little of this once magnificent building survives. More pics and info: undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/kel

The ruins of Kelso Abbey. The image shows a diagonal view of the grey stone ruin of part of the abbey church at Kelso, standing in one place to the height of the tower with lower segments to its left and right. In the foreground, what would once have been the interior of the abbey church is grassed over and covered with gravestones. There are trees both sides of the ruin. The sky is blue.

Ruins of Roxburgh Castle, Kelso, Scotland between ca. 1890 and ca. 1900. Views of landscape and architecture in Scotland Scotland Kelso

#Kelso #Scotland #Kelso #photography #historicalPhotos

The image depicts a serene landscape scene, with a calm river meandering through it. On the right side of the photo, there is a grassy hill covered in lush greenery that slopes gently down towards the water. The river itself appears to be quite still and reflects the surrounding trees on its surface. On the left side of the image, there's a wooden bridge crossing over the river at an angle, providing access between the two sides of the landscape. In the background, silhouettes of trees can be seen against the skyline, adding depth to the scene. The overall atmosphere is peaceful and natural, typical of countryside or rural settings.

Watching a recent BBC #Scotland #Landward episode showing some #sheep being dipped. And remembered my gggg-granddad’s special sheep dip. This advert comes from the #Kelso Chronicle 21 July 1854. #BBCLandward #Farming #Agriculture #ScottishBorders #Genealogy #FamilyHistory

Advert from Francis Somner in Kelso for his sheep dip powder, which is free from mercury and kind to the sheep. Also makes the wool white. There is a picture of a sheep at the top of the advert, which is addressed to farmers.
