Koniec pewnej epoki. Legendarny Nova Launcher kończy swój żywot

To smutna wiadomość dla milionów użytkowników Androida, którzy przez lata dopasowywali wygląd systemu do własnych potrzeb.

Nova Launcher, jedna z najpopularniejszych i najbardziej cenionych aplikacji do personalizacji ekranu głównego, w praktyce kończy swój rozwój. Jej założyciel i jedyny deweloper w ostatnim czasie, Kevin Barry, poinformował, że został odsunięty od dalszych prac nad projektem.

Nova Launcher towarzyszył entuzjastom Androida od 2011 roku i czasów wersji systemu znanej jako Ice Cream Sandwich. Przez ponad dekadę aplikacja była synonimem niemal nieograniczonych możliwości personalizacji. Kluczowy moment w jej historii nastąpił w 2022 roku, gdy została przejęta przez firmę analityczną Branch. Już w 2024 roku pojawiły się niepokojące sygnały, gdy zwolniono niemal cały zespół, pozostawiając przy projekcie jedynie jego twórcę.

Teraz historia dobiegła końca. W pożegnalnym wpisie na blogu zatytułowanym „So Long” (pol. „Żegnajcie”), Kevin Barry napisał wprost: „Muszę was poinformować, że odszedłem z Branch i nie jestem już zaangażowany w rozwój Nova Launcher”. W dalszej części wyjaśnił, że ostatecznie „został poproszony o zaprzestanie prac nad Nova Launcher”. Oznacza to, że aplikacja, wciąż dostępna w Sklepie Play, pozostaje w zawieszeniu, bez jasnej przyszłości i szans na dalsze aktualizacje.

Największym ciosem dla społeczności jest jednak nie tylko wstrzymanie rozwoju, ale także pogrzebanie planów na udostępnienie kodu źródłowego aplikacji (open source). Barry ujawnił, że przez ostatnie miesiące przygotowywał projekt do upublicznienia, co było jedną z obietnic złożonych przez firmę Branch w momencie przejęcia. Krok ten pozwoliłby społeczności na dalsze, niezależne rozwijanie launchera. Niestety, ten wysiłek również został zatrzymany.

Choć teoretycznie Branch może przekazać projekt w inne ręce, dla wielu użytkowników Nova Launcher w formie, którą znali i cenili przez lata, właśnie umarł. To symboliczny koniec pewnej ery w świecie Androida, w której niezależne aplikacje dawały użytkownikom pełną kontrolę nad wyglądem i funkcjonalnością ich urządzeń.

I finished #KevinBarry's 'Bohane: a novel'. It is lyrical, gripping with a lovely humour. There are moments where it reads like a pastiche of #Joyce, probably deliberately. I don't get the point of it though. Bohane is a nasty place with horrible weather and worse people. The violence, though not pornographic, doesn't have the visceral terror of #Bolaño's (whose does?). Perhaps it is a mediation on time, change, loss and eternity. Certainly readable.
