#KingFishers

2025-05-13

Ahhh, a morning visit from a Kingfisher. Nothing like being greeted with a cacophony of CLAAACK!!! and all-around general grumpiness.

But once it settles in, it’s all business.

#WoodedStream #Birds #Kingfishers

A Kingfisher sits on the stubby end of a dead branch. Its head is a gray black set of tufted feathers that makes up most of is head, including surrounding its black eye. Under its cobalt pointy beak is a band of white which makes up its neck if you will. Its wings are a blue gray, which it has pointed back against its body. Most of the branches in the background are blurry and though it is not pictured, a brook is under the birds watchful eye.

Went out this afternoon to try and spot some at the local pond. An older man came by to tell me I wouldn't have much luck sitting and waiting without a hide, but proved him wrong by getting some close shots and I saw a pair .

Male kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) perched on a branch in front of the clay mound in which there are likely one or more nests.Female kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) perched between some branches on the waterside. Flying male kingfisher (Alcedo atthis). They are notoriously very quick flyers and hard to photograph. In this case a lucky shot where its body and head were in focus, but the wings are blurred.Pair of kingfishers (Alcedo atthis) mating, seen from a little distance away so the photo isn't very sharp. The female is pressed down onto the branch while the male has mounted her back.

Interacting with the neighbours.

Watch and listen the female kingfisher calling down on Hackney Marshes on the River Lea.

@Adrenochrome @Chris @MorpheusB

“The scientific name is derived from Greek mythology; the ancient belief that the birds nested in the sea and called them halkyons (Latin halcyon) from hals (sea) and kyon (born). In Greek mythology the gods gave the halkyons the ability to calm the waters when nesting. In mythology, one of the Pleiades named Alcyone (Alcedo in Latin) married Ceyx who was killed in a shipwreck. Alcyone drowned herself in grief and the gods revived them both as #kingfishers.”
